decent book for beginners

This book gives the beginner an easy process to follow in painting fantasy or sci-fi miniatures however their paint products are much more expensive compared to their competitors and as an advanced painter i am not overly enthused with their advice on washing the entire miniature right after basecoating it and then obliterating most of the effect by applying the first highlight layer of paint - if you're going to wash the entire miniature, at least reapply the basecoat so you get a finer gradation in the colors instead of just leaping on to the next highlight color! i am also not a great fan of the "tron" effect where you basically highlight all the edges of the miniature irrespective of the light source. the recommended paint schemes are a great starting point if you don't wan to waste time trying to figure out which colors go well together on some of their main model lines. the dvd provides great reinforcement of the text. i did learn something new about using an air sprayer to both prime and basecoat miniatures quickly but i stayed away from purchasing their propellant dependent sprayer and bought an iwata airbrush since i already have a decent compressor.
you have to decide when painting miniatures whether you're going to go all out like 'eavy metal style and spend hours on just one model or try to paint a bunch of them quickly and efficiently so you can start using them. if you decide to go hardcore on painting an individual miniature, i highly recommend the "hot lead" dvd series which will cover all the real advanced techniques beyond basic layering like wetblending, dryblending, NMM (non-metallic metals which are the current fad). on the other hand, if you want a really fast and easy method to paint a large army of miniatures, i highly recommend looking at the thearmypainter.com web site for some ideas in getting the miniatures off the tables and on to your game board (basically spray/priming with the main basecoat color, applying the other basecoats as needed and dipping the entire miniature into a stain to finish the process and then spraying it with a matt finish to knock off the glossy finish). googling "zenithal highlighting" will also give you some tricks on how to quickly highly the miniature without spending a lot of time blending through either layering or wetblending. i used the army painter method and an iwata airbrush to finish up all the miniatures in a heroquest game i purchased off of ebay in only a few weeks compared to months it would have taken me with my old style of painting.
regardless of which path you choose, stay away from the citadel brand of paint as they give you much less for more money than the competitors like vallejo, p3 and reaper. personally i've grown quite fond of the dropper bottles that reaper and vallejo use because they prevent the paint from drying out in the bottles like p3 and citadel do although they clog up every once in a while.

Very good for new GW painters (who can afford all the paints)

It's a bit of a shame that this book is out of print. Many beginning painters start with Warhammer 40K, and I find the helmeted space marines especially easy. While the techniques in this book are otherwise readily available on the 'net, the instructions are tailored towards Games Workshop miniatures (both 40K and fantasy), certainly useful for the GW miniatures painter. The book even includes step-by-step instructions and iconic color schemes for specific armies. On the down side, I doubt any beginner would be able to follow the examples in the techniques, as they often start with a partially painted model then apply the technique to it, without providing specific instructions how they painted the model before the technique was applied. The guide also assumes you have the various GW paints on hand, not that you didn't expect to spend a lot of money on GW paints. I also believe this guide would be *far* more useful if it was also part of a deluxe "all in one" kit with the paints and models used in the guide, and wished they had step-by-step guides for their wide variety of models. It may also be a little irritating that, rather telling you how to make your own washes, glazes, etc., they suggest buying GW products. The DVD, meanwhile, is a little on the dry side, but compliments the book, reinforcing the techniques. However, the army painting section is disappointingly lacking, only discussing Tyranid and Space Marine armies.
If you're not a GW painter, you already know to skip this book. The Reaper Learn to Paint Kits are far more economical and value-oriented. However, if you and your wallet have decided to paint GW armies and figures, this is the book to get. Just be prepared to spend even more money on paints!

This is a Great Book to Help in Painting Warhammer Figures. It has Good Pictures and Instructions That Take You Step By Step and can Stand By Itself So You Can View While Painting. If Warhammer or Warhammer 40K are Games Your Interested in but the Painting is Holding You Back, This Book Will Help You Paint Like a Pro.Plus There Is a DVD in the Back as Well.
