The graphic visuals in the book, including the extensive Egyptian hieroglyphics along with Mary L. Swanson's pen illustrations of the novel's content, provide the reader with an immersive experience in the alternative world of Menmenet.

About the Author
Robert J. Muller manages the technology behind a major genomics database by day and writes mystery fiction by night. He lives part time in San Francisco and part time in Menmenet and dines well in both cities.

Egypt in the Bay

The Americans stopped at the Rockies, and the expanding Egyptian Empire settled the Western Coast in this alternative history/mystery novel. In Menmenet, the City-by-the-Bay, Chef Nekhen is murdered, and Shesmu, his protege chef helps the police find his murderer. The mystery unfolds logically and interestingly. Rife with Egyptian words and customs (explained in the margins with hieroglyphs) slow down the reader, but add authority to the story. Authentic line drawings add an interesting element. An appended glossary lists all the hieroglyphs. An engrossing look at what might have been, and a feast for Egyptologists.

Egypt Comes to San Francisco

If I spoke Ancient Egyptian, I'd give this book 5 stars. I like languages, and I got used to and after a while enjoyed the liberal sprinkling of Egyptian words in this alternate reality story, but it takes away from the plot until you're up on the vocabulary. I now do know some Ancient Egyptian! The story itself is engaging, and I like the characters. It has something for foodies, mystery lovers, and Egyptologists! I look forward to reading the sequel.

Excellent alternate history - Three Books in One

The Two Kites by Robert J Muller is three books in one.

First, it is an alternate history. Imagine the European settlement of the America never made it to California. Instead San Francisco (Menmenet) is a Egyptian (Kemet) settlement. In this book we see the classical culture transplanted to modern times. Egyptian gods and burial customs combined with cell phones, Egyptian architectural and cooking transplanted to the San Francisco geography and climate. These imaginings alone might be worth the cost of admission.

Second, this book is a mystery, a murder and a stolen knife ... a knife that traces its history to ancient Egyptian cults and sacrifices. Mystery readers will not be surprised nor disappointed with the police detectives, concerned, but reluctant private citizen, and multiples twists and turns.

Finally, this is a work of art. The book uses over 150 classical Egyptian words. While a glossary is included at the end of the book, the beauty of this production is that the extra wide margins are used to show each Egyptian word transliterated in the familiar Latin alphabet (as they appear in the text) along with the translation and the beautifully rendered hieroglyphic forms on every page. In this way the flow is not hamper by the appearance of these Kemet words. The artistry is completed with delightful line-drawing illustrations by Mary J Swanson throughout.

Whether you read this book for the alternate history, the mystery, or the beauty of the production, you will not be disappointed.

About the Author

Jefferson Ingram began his academic career by teaching Constitutional History for the Department of History at the University of Dayton in the Spring of 1978 and entered a� full-time tenure track position in the Criminal Justice Program in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Dayton in the Fall of 1978.� He continued to teach in the Department of History for two more semesters and offered courses in Criminal Procedure, The Law of Evidence, and Criminal Law until the late 1990's for the Criminal Justice Program.� During this time, he team taught a death penalty course, The Death Penalty, with a philosophy professor and offered a philosophy-criminal justice course jointly with a philosophy professor on The Moral Basis for Civil and Criminal Law.� In 1990, he taught a course for the School of Business Administration, Law for the Accounting Profession. In 1994, the Criminal Justice Program became the Criminal Justice Studies Program and the course on evidence was phased out with new duties added in the form of teaching a senior seminar course for all graduating Criminal Justice students.� In the Summer of 2003, Jefferson Ingram joined the Department of Political Science at the University of Dayton as a tenured faculty member, where he continues to teach and support students in the Criminal Justice Studies Program as needed.

Yes, it's a textbook alright.

This was kind of dry. I don't know, it's a textbook.

The one thing I didn't like was the lack of definitions of keywords in the text. Easily remedied by employing the use of Google searches, but still. It would have been helpful.

My First Chase

This is my first James Hadley Chase read and so I am not in a place where I can determine if this was one of his better or poorer efforts.
I enjoyed this book in much the same way that I enjoy some Turner Movie Classics. I don't watch them to witness great acting or incredible story lines but to remove myself from this current time and my place within it.
Indeed, as I read this book, I could not help but hear Humphrey Bogart delivering the protagonist's lines in Sam Spade fashion. And so, just like those old movies, this book provided the same warm, engaging feelings.
I plan on reading another Chase book in the near future.

A Top-Notch Thriller Set In Post-War London

Back in 1947 when Chase wrote this hardboiled thriller, the war had just ended and many protagonists in novels were returning war veterans, trying to make a life in the world they barely remembered. For the narrator of this novel, a reporter, who had spent several years as a war correspondent in London before the front moved on to France, he fondly remembers his war years in London. Back in the states, he remembers his long-lasting romance with a dancehall hostess and, when he wins it big at the track, he returns to London and seeks her out. But, alas, it turns out she had just committed suicide the day before, sticking her head in the oven with the windows all sealed and the gas full blast. The suicide doesn't make sense and we have a reporter investigating, sometimes alongside Scotland Yard, sometimes in spite of Scotland Yard and the story that follows is a terrific thriller of the kind one can expect from Chase. Between blonde bimbos and gangsters and thieves and muggers and the like, it is one great read that is hard to put down. This is a great read and makes one anxious to try another Hadley novel.

AND IT WAS AS GOOD AS ALL OF THE OTHER 89 !!!!

Authentic and Divine

Sri Rudram is part of Yajur Veda and extols the Glories of Lord Shiva. The commentary by Swami Dayananda Saraswati is excellent and one can immensely benefit from them. The chant can be heard in a meditative state or recited with proper training. Highly spiritual material and very highly recommended.

If you're looking for an authoritative commentary on the Rudram by a distinguished teacher of Traditional Vedanta, then look no further. Swami Dayananda Saraswati ji is one of the finest preceptors one can come across. The clarity with which he unfolds the glory of Lord Shiva in this set of hymns collectively referred to as the Sri Rudram is second to none. Cannot recommend this enough. Strongly suggest purchasing other books authored by Swami Dayananda ji, which too are handled masterfully by the preceptor!

This is one of those books that's difficult to rate. It's not a sit and read quietly book, but it is also a sit and read quietly book. It's one of those Sanskrit texts with great translation and commentary that we hope to understand more as we read. That's how I approach it. What I love most is the author's devotional approach to the topic and translation and how there is a very inspiring "one liner" in nearly every commentary of each mantra. This book gets five stars because of how reading it makes me feel.

About the Author
Dennis Glaeser is a commercial pilot, Gold Seal Flight Instructor, Groundschool Instructor.and has a degree in Aerospace Engineering. He has commercial flying experience as a Part 135 Charter pilot. His aviation instruction experience includes being an AOPA weekend clinic instructor teaching Pinch Hitter and Instrument refresher courses, both as a flight instructor and ground instructor. He has also conducted Flight Instructor Refresher clinics for the Greater St. Louis Flight Instructor Association.
Dennis was an Assistant Professor at Parks College of St. Louis Universlty, teaching Private Pilot Groundschool for over 12 years. He has been the author of AN INVITATION TO FLY since the 2nd Edition.

Very effective learning tool

I have been self studying aviation and all that it entails for some time now. Initially started buying all sorts of reading material. Soon learned I could spend a small fortune in just books alone. Some aren't very good, others are strictly technical, in short not what I needed.
This book may seem pricey to the uninitiated; don't let it throw you. The information provided under one cover is very concise and intuitive. It is not meant to be the end to all study and info gathering. Yet, it touches on most areas of flight knowledge. You'll learn how to use and interpret the E6-B flight computer, how a good flight plan is put together, FAR's, AIM...and just what are all those charts associated with navigation? Not meant to be the final word on knowledge, you'll also be provided with references to other publications and reading material.

A clear and concise approach to the essential information necessary for the student pilot. I often referred to this book during my training. It gives clear and well explained examples utilizing real world aviation problems. The section on weather is excellent for primary training as well as a reference.
This book covers all topics relevant to private pilot training without beating any subject to death. The excellent graphics and pictorial examples help to make semingly complex topics simple. I think this book is an indispensable resource for any student pilot. Particularly useful is the section on cross country flight planning which brings all of the stages of flight planning together in a good example of a cross country flight.
