True classic, must have

Classic blues from a record that spawned thousands of blues rock guitarists copying Clapton's licks. Count me in as one of them. A real classic. Love it.

Great book/CD combination

This opinion is from someone who only recently got back into playing after twenty years away.

I think this is an excellent book and CD combination.

The backing tracks are good quality.

I can only comment on the score/tab for "Hideaway" and "Steppin' Out". Both are very close to the original and the transcriber marked down notes I couldn't hear at full speed.

I would recommend it to anyone who wants to have a go at early Clapton solos.

In order to get the best out of the book, I would also recommend getting some software/hardware to slow down the original track and play along with it.

About the Author
John Rutter was born in London in 1945 and studied music at Clare College, Cambridge. His compositions embrace choral, orchestral, and instrumental music, and he has edited or co-edited various choral anthologies, including four Carols for Choirs volumes with Sir David Willcocks and the Oxford Choral Classics series. From 1975 to 1979 he was Director of Music at Clare College, and in 1981 he formed his own choir, the Cambridge Singers. He now divides his time between composition and conducting and is sought after as a guest conductor for the world's leading choirs and orchestras. Born in 1919, David Willcocks began his musical career as a chorister at Westminster Abbey, later winning scholarships to Clifton College and King's College, Cambridge. Following war service, he was elected Fellow of King's College, and later became Organist of Salisbury and Worcester Cathedrals, conducting the Three Choirs Festival whilst at Worcester. Willcocks returned to King's College, Cambridge as Director of Music from 1957-1974, with the first collection of his arrangements in the Carols for Choirs series publishing in 1961. He was Director of Music at the Royal College of Music from 1974-1984, and was knighted in the Queen's Silver Jubilee Honours List in 1977. The masters do it again!

I had the pleasure of participating in a workshop with David Willcocks, and received this book as part of it. It was first published in 1987, but Sir David had some amusing anecdotes to share about how he and John Rutter, another name to reckon with in choral music circles, put it together.
This is what I like about it:
* These gentlemen are giants in the English choral music scene, and personify the English choral tradition in everything they do. So it's a pleasure to find that they have included many carols from other countries, as well as the English ones. It's very hard to find non-English-language carols, so this is a nice little collection.
* Their 4-part arrangements are imaginative but easy enough to sight-sing.
* It also includes a listing of church festivals other than Christmas, with the names and page numbers of carols that would be appropriate for each.
* For ease of navigation as you're singing, the verses are in Roman type while the refrains are in italics.
* For reasons that are not clear, they have chosen to include the text in the original language in some cases, but not all. The foreign language texts are immediately under the English translations, so you can sing in either language.
* At the very end of the book is the order of service for the traditional Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, with instructions on the appropriate rank of each person to read, from chorister to bishop.
If you are only going to buy one carol book, this and the Oxford Book of Carols are the best ones to consider. The Oxford has more in it, and is hugely more expensive, so I recommend this one! it'll take you several Christmasses to sing your way through it.

Lucked out! Most of your choir carols in it and David Willcocks pencil instructions

This carol book has terrific carols and some very unusual ones. They range from easy to hard so most choirs can benefit from them. It actually has an outline and readings from the Service of Lessons and Carols which could be very valuable for the music director and church leader.

My particular used copy just happened to have notes in it from David Willcocks himself. Can you imagine!!! This was just too good to be believed. I love nothing more than this service of lessons and carols, so the best is here. There are also some Easter Carols --worth the price.

Absolutely marvelous collection with wonderful descants and interesting arrangements. I have given copies to many people because I love this book so MUCH!!! If you've ever lived in England, or ever loved CDs of King's College Choir or St. John's College Choir from Cambridge, England, you will discover the arrangements in this great book!

About the Author

I feel like I am a fledgling at the House of Night.

I strongly advise anyone interested in the House of Night series to get this guide! No, it is not a guide into how P.C. and Kristen Cast created the House of Night series like most guide books, this is an actual fledgling handbook! This book goes over everything brought up in the series where Zoey and her friends would make any reference to the handbook. This book goes over various House of Night rituals and even incorporates some real life historical events to correlate with the Casts' dark world. This book is a must have companion for any House of Night fan!

Not what I expected

The Fledgling Handbook 101 turned out to be a disappointing read. I didn't even finish and passed it off to my son who also is an avid reader of the HON series. The book had a promising start with what you would expect to find in a 'handbook' for a vampyre fledgling. After the initial introduction of what to expect, description of the HON forms (which was interesting), Celebrations, and information about the Dark Daughters/Sons, the book just rambled off into history. I expected more information regarding what would be taught in the classes and daily life in the HON.

Ye who enter the House of Night will be welcomed as a new student and given The Fledgling Handbook 101 as a guide. Veteran vampires understand how difficult the conversion from sunlight to moonlight is. The guide provides the fledgling with an introduction to vampire life as an undead and the societal Maslow Hierarchy of surviving amidst the massive humans. There are treatises on vampire biology and history as the species traces its roots to Lilith. Included is a section on Nightkind Elementology, which is intended to help the newbie survive the terrors of the dark. A bit more experienced Fledglings like Zoey provides words of encouragement as they detail some of their adjustments. Finally a who's who like Sappho and Shekinah provide words of inspiration.

Young adult fans of the series will appreciate the entertaining handbook enhanced by Ms. Doner's colorful drawings as the newcomers are guided on what to expect as their body changes in a puberty-like twist. As Shekinah says: "Within chaos lies opportunity"; not for everybody as this entertaining reference guide is a companion piece to the saga by providing Fledglings and readers with increased opportunity of understand the world as Cast and less chaos.

Building on this comparison, Berger focuses on action-adventure games which, like film and fiction, tell stories but which also involve culturally important departures in the conventions of narrative. After defining a set of bipolar oppositions between print and electronic narratives, Berger considers the question of whether video games are truly interactive or only superficially so, and whether they have the potential to replace print narratives in the culture at large.

A unique dimension of the book is its bio-psycho-social analysis of the video game phenomenon. Berger considers the impact of these games on their players, from physical changes (everything from neurological problems to obesity) to psychological consequences, with reference to violence and sexual attitudes. He takes these questions further by examining three enormously popular games-Myst/Riven, Tomb Raider, and Half-Life-for their attitudes toward power, gender, violence, and guilt. In his conclusion, Berger concentrates on the role of violence in video games and whether they generate a sense of alienation in certain addicted players who become estranged from family and friends. Accessibly written and broad-ranging in approach, Video Games offers a way to interpret a major popular phenomenon.

Not for True Scholars of Video Games

As a scholar of video game research and a graduate student in Anthropology I was extremely curious and happy to get a copy of this book to include in my library. I was however extremely disappointed. This book presented numerous problems and oversights of video games in general. Although there are many areas covered, none of them are covered in any serious depth or scholarly attention. Too often, Berger makes personal comments (typically negative) without backing them up. When comparing books to video games and other narrative forms, he really splits hairs in trying to bring out differences. His compartmentalization on the subject is extremely artificial and disturbing. The typos and spelling errors are enough to keep a reader frustrated. Even if you are not a scholar of video games, I would not recommend this book. There are numerous other books out there that are better written and look at video games on a much more even level.

Nothing really new here...

As scholar of popular culture, I was understandably curious to see what Berger had to say. Unfortunately, I came away disapointed. This is a book that has a few good points, some problematic points as well as some parts that are pretty uninteresting; however, Berger has done his research. He cites several interesting sources, and for that fact alone it is worth checking out.
Berger goes into some great depth comparing video games to books and of course, as so often the case, he finds video games lacking. He discussed the things that books can do, such as identification, interiority, leaving things up to the imagination of the reader, and stops by saying that video games do none of these things as well. He neglects to discuss any of the things that video games do better than books, which is an odd omission considering that this book is about video games, not books...
While I disagree with many of his conclusions, Berger does do a good job of going over many of the general issues of studying video games. I feel that one might be better served by photocopying his bibliography and tracking down his sources, but as in introduction and overview it does a good job. The production of the book is a bit shoddy as I found numerous spelling errors and problems with the formatting which distracted from the message of the book. This is not a bad book, but it is not a great book. If you are already a video game scholar, I don't know that you will find anything interesting in this book. If you are interested in studying video games in an academic way, read Trigger Happy by Steven Poole instead.

Book Sorely Lacking

The back of this book says that it begins with the tracing of the evolution of video games. However, any book that includes a history of games and doesn't include the names Baer, Bushnell, and Atari, is sorely lacking. Also, it would have been nice had Berger read the two definitive books on video games; Leonard Herman's Phoenix: The Fall & Rise of Videogames and Steven Kent's Ultimate History of Video Games. Instead, his source was J.C. Herz's Joystick Nation, a book that has been poorly received by the video gaming community.

Requires Online Service (1st year included, $30/year after)

This book is HEAVILY tied to an online framework at [...], access to which is provided by a code inside the front cover. Based on a quick response from their support line, that code is good for one year of access for one person. Additional years or additional people cost $30/ea for just the code so it's currently a better deal just to buy multiple books for the first year for each person.

Lots of questions can be answered here: (Amazon removes URLs so see my comment outside the review below.)

Essentially to make best use of this book you need individual Minecraft accounts and individual learntomod.com accounts for each person both teacher and student.

With that said, the framework they use looks really nice. It's essentially Scratch for Minecraft Mods. This would be especially good for younger programmers who may not grasp the concepts of loops and conditionals without the visual reminders languages like Scratch provide.

I REALLY wanted to like this. I was prepared to LOVE it

Man I wanted, I REALLY wanted to like this. I was prepared to LOVE it, with no effort. but, yo, the book doesn't match the website, which is slow to load and buggy as hell and not very user friendly , much less for kids that don't know what's going on. The software itself feels more like it's in beta, and only ports over to the playable server half the time, and the "live preview" is filled with these FREAKY looking monsters rather than minecraft objects. Look, nice ideas, the plug-in visual coding stuff is fantastic, but the current thing is unusable, I am super sorry to say. I hope it's still a work in progress and I come back in a year and it's suddenly awesome, because there's that potential, but this is not ready for the public.

Waste of Possibility

There was a bunch of potential for greatness here; however, the book itself is just a launching pad to get involved with a website. While the site is free at first, it is necessary to pay to get all of the benefits. To top it off, the programs are buggy and hard to get to work consistently. I wouldn't purchase this again, if I had known what it would be like.
