Excellent Investment Blueprint

I found this book to be exceptionally useful in developing a long-term investment plan. Ferri makes excellent use of academic findings and statistical data to support the use of various asset allocation strategies. He provides a fabulous investment blueprint along with specific investment options for the layperson to structure an investment portfolio. Also, he lays out his points in a concise and compelling way.

I have now read John Bogle's "Common Sense on Mutual Funds," Burton Malkiel's "A Random Walk Down Wall Street," and this book. They each naturally have different emphases and taken as a whole are quite helpful. I found this book by Ferri to be the most useful in actually structuring a specific investment plan, and I agree with his well-reasoned critique of Bogle, who de-emphasizes international investing to too large an extent. (I also commend Ferri for what he has done with his investment company, which charges a far lower rate than I had thought existed in the financial advisor arena - merely .25% versus the commonly charged 1%.)

A few negatives with the book, however, and as noted by some other reviewers (including AmazonGuy), are that it is rife with typos and grammatical mistakes; and it is repetitive, although that can be helpful for people looking only to read specific chapters. Nevertheless, the substance of the book is fabulous, and I will be applying Ferri's teachings as I construct my investment portfolio.

Great information but sloppy

This is a great book for someone looking to assemble their portfolio and not only successfully diversify it, but understand WHY diversification among asset classes works to reduce risk and increase returns.

My only real complaint is that it's sloppy - thus the three stars. I almost had to put the book down because I found so many spelling and grammatical errors in the first chapter. It was very distracting to me.

One has to wonder if this book was even proofread. (I think one or two errors in an entire volume is somewhat acceptable, but not the level of errors seen here.) I asked myself "Can I take the advice of such a careless author?" But in the end I think the concepts are mostly sound and it's a helpful intro.

But please, do a revision and fix all the errors!

Great Guide

I just finished the outstanding book, All About Asset Allocation, by Richard Ferri. While I am well versed on the topic, I still learned quite a bit as Ferri goes went into detail on every facet of the practice. The only negative was that there seemed to be a lot of repetition, but given how important this topic is, a little repetition is a good thing. Ferri excelled in providing plenty of low-cost providers of index funds to be used in your asset allocation plan, but fell short of suggesting many ETFs as the selection at the time of publication was not as extensive as it is now, 2006 (first edition).

If you want a step-by-step manual on proper asset allocation, this is your guide. Each chapter guides you along as you build fund by fund until you have a portfolio of up to 12 different asset classes by the end of the book. There are plenty of examples on where the research originated from (Fama and French, Markowitz, and more) and makes for an enjoyable and quick read. His other books are just as helpful.

MSKUS Has a NEW difining text.

I own the first addition and it was good. The DVD was a real value. I own every credible text on this subject. This one rocks the socks off of the previous texts. I still do hold Bianchi as the BIBLE, but this edition has passed Jacobson for diagrams and images. A Strong Case for the new defining text for MSKUS imaging learning. Well done!!

Maybe the best MSK book to date. I have most of the major books out there but this one is the best in my opinion. Not the most comprehensive one out there (that would be the Stephano Bianchi book) but still excellent. Very good text, images, and included needle techniques. A tad expensive when I bought it but heard the price has come down recently.

Love Thy Neighbor as Thyself

Love it. The book is above loving self and appreication your uniqueness. There is a trend in America where younger and younger children are being shaped by the media. Young black and Latino girls want to look like Elsa from the movie Frozen. This book is a very ethnic and a refreshing intermission from Anglo-Saxons dominate children books. We need more diversity, and a lot more inter-diversity children books. Sadly, many children books are either too Afrocentric or oversaturated with an Euro-motiff. I would love to see more children stories of Natives interacting with Chinese or Latinos communing with Asian Indian or Jewish children skipping rope with Ethiopians. Ha! Maybe I should write one!

Great book but..

This is a fantastic book. I loved it!

- I especially loved it when the money for the purchase of it went to Anne Frank
and not to a pirate stealing the book and publishing it here himself.

This edition looks definitely like a stolen copyright to me.

Imagine a person who would steal from Anne Frank..

I wrote a lot more about this but they wouldn't post the review. That's
why the review begins so oddly.

Anne Frank Organization have been informed. Amazon too.

If it's not stolen it's easy enough for a legitimate publisher to prove.
Just ask Amazon to investigate your legal right.

Until then customers should really buy a different edition, of which there are many from
very large publishers with names.

Oh and contact Amazon urgently and The Anne Frank Organization via their website.
This edition is on the bestseller lists already because it was specially put up to
trick people for Holocaust Remembrance Day..

Someone really needs to take strong and immediate legal action on this.

Great learning tool!

I really appreciate this book for what it is, a beginner's book. Will this book be applicable to you as a seasoned developer in any language, I don't think so, it really is a "Build your own site" type of book.

For those who are interested in getting a solid foundation in many of the basics of ASP.NET 2.0, I would recommend this book. I will be following this book with Damien Foggon's ASP.NET Beginning DB Book and then moving to Chistian Darie's ASP.NET Ecommerce book finishing up with the Problem, Design Solution ASP.NET 2.0 by wrox. I tend to need alot of example to get me where I am going, and I feel like I got much more of a bang for my buck with this book as it was easy to read and follow the examples.

Now, I did run into some setup issues that produced some errors along the way. Patience and persistence paid off everytime, along with some assistance from those on the web who had the same problems before me. In no way was the book responsible for my system setup, I actually received support from the sitepoint forums, so thanks.

Looking forward to getting into the next book. BTW, I have already built 5 published sites with just the help of this book and I have more clients calling.

In summary, from html to asp.net 2.0 in 8 days with great success! Thanks for a great book!

Best Introduction to .NET

I have been developing software for years. I have been programming in VB since 1991 and BASIC since 1978. I know many old languages like Assembly, Fortran and COBOL, but I have been hesitant to take the time to learn the new VB.NET and have figured C# would have been too hard. That is not the case and this book has made it easy. I read some reviews here on Amazon from other developers who thought the book had too much easy things in the first few chapters, but that is what makes it so good. By the end of the book, you are definitely wanting more meat and are ready to buy the next level of learning book, but you know the core of both languages. Although the accompanying website for the book has all of the code for download, I made sure I typed in all of the code. I did VB.NET first, then C#. By the second or third example, I was able to code the C# example without looking at the book from just seeing the VB.NET example. C# is very similar to VB.NET making it VERY EASY to learn. I definitely recommend this book! If you haven't delved into .NET yet, this is absolutely the best first book you could buy. Thihnk of this as the 101 college intro class to .NET. All other books will become easy after you read this one. The book claims that it was written with both the developer and non-developer in mind. I would have to say that I definitely believe a non-developer could follow it and learn the languages.

Nicely presented material and easy to understand...

I had a really good look at this alongside about 10 other books (in a book store for a few hours) and it was one of two that I finally selected. What I really like is the fact that the website screenshots looks like a decent professional website. So many of these ASP.Net books show screenshots of websites that look totally amateurish and unusable in the real World. I like to see programming books that show slick results and this book fixes that problem with some very cool screenshots.

It has decent technical coverage of the material and it's very nicely laid out and easy to digest.

It's a great beginner/intermediate level book if you're just starting out.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
