Vowell's survey of the current state of American AM and FM radio concentrates on the Chicago-area airwaves and Montana State University's KGLT in Bozeman. Aside from Nirvana, Hole, and KGLT, Vowell doesn't find much to like. NPR is too stodgy, Garrison Keillor too sappy, Republicans and Rush Limbaugh simply too much. She likes Chicago's quirky, low-powered WZRD, though, especially its airing of the Church of the SubGenius' Hour of Slack, and also establishment rock critics Greil Marcus and Jim DeRogatis. Vowell expresses her opinions strongly and forthrightly. Her criticisms of NPR and Keillor, for that matter, are hard for even their fans to disagree with, but panning Keillor while praising smarmy NPR elder newswoman Susan Stamberg seems odd, and getting the call letters of Chicago's all-sports station wrong casts doubt on her objectivity and thoroughness. Oh well, if you worship at the altar of the media god Alternative and take radio really, really seriously, Vowell's rant is just the thing. If you don't, it is still stimulating reading. Mike Tribby

Be ready to hit the scan button repeatedly with this wildly uneven, day-by-day-by-day diary of a year--1995--spent listening to the radio. Like strip malls and superhighways, radio has become such an integral part of the American landscape that we rarely notice its sheer ubiquity. Between our houses, our cars, our offices, even our elevators, there are more than 500,000,000 radios in this country, all spewing a 24-hour-a-day hodgepodge of everything from rock to religion to right-wing ranting. Any account of this vast cacophony is necessarily subjective, but Vowell, a music columnist for San Francisco Weekly, spices her impressionistic stew with unhealthy dollops of narcissism and jejune banality: ``I only conceived this diary as a means to say that I'm just as confused and overwhelmed as my elders, just as ill-informed and worried and perplexed and lacking in answers (but willing to look) as people twice my age.'' In these limited terms, the book is a roaring success. As Vowell spins her way around the country, tuning in to the local radio stations, she reacts like the perfect poster girl for Generation X: I mean, don't you just hate Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich and all those mean Republicans? And how about National Public Radio, isn't it, totally nonadventurous and establishment? And doesn't Top-Forty completely bite? What little wisdom there is to be found in this landscape apparently comes mainly from grungy Seattle rockers like Nirvana and Pearl Jam (those who believe that truth resides in rock lyrics will be particularly taken with this book). By the end, Vowell is justly sick and tired of radio, of the noise and chatter, the hate and spew and ``all the stupidity.'' I liked some of Vowell's earlier works

I liked some of Vowell's earlier works. Not so much on this. Perhaps I am too old, 60 years old, to enjoy the angst of her generation. However, I got on well with co-workers of her age. For some reason the book didn't click with me. But, Vowell is nonetheless an excellent writer.

this book is a diary of an entire year's worth of listening to the radio. most people only listen in their cars, but sarah didn't have a tv or something, so she kept a journal of what she heard on the radio. in some cities, this would be the most boring task and picking your belly button lint would be more fun. but she was lucky enough to live in a place where they take their radio seriously. this isn't anything like take the cannoli, but don't let that stop you. it's an incredible sociological experiment. plus it also helps that she's employed by npr. sort of.

Because Sarah Has A Masters Degree...in Art History

Having read and enjoyed Ms. Vowell's most recent tome, The Wordy Shipmates I can only say reading Radio On was, well, excruciating. Many years ago when public radio, meaning mostly college radio, was actually amusing there was a show called, I think, Mr. Science. The lead went something to the affect of "You know he's right because he has a MASTERS DEGREE in Science." Just change "Science" to "Art History." I can only conclude that in 1996 St Martin's Press was dredging the streets looking for writers, or they would not have published these pissy ramblings of a recently graduated college student. Apparently, according to little Sarah, who like most folks on Public Radio, never had a real job, the highest form of art is Curt Kobain and his strung out girlfriend Courtney Love. Oh, please, give us a break. I know, it was so hard being a teen in the 1990s. That is why they did heroin and made crappy music. To quote ol' Curt--"Drugs are a waste of time. They destroy your memory and your self-respect and everything that goes along with with your self esteem." What insight! This makes Jim Morrison's line--"The blue bus is calling us" sound like a work of genius. I just gave up on page 146. My head hurt, I could not take any more. The author comes off as a typical NPR elitist, laughing at all us idiots, whose tax dollars go toward funding their little quaint hobby, known as public radio. Oh yeah, she does try and convince the reader she is one of us, by harkening back to her roots in Oklahoma and making reference to life at Sun records. Yes, this book is that rambling. We are given such little time on this earth, please don't waste a second of it reading this book. To quote the great CREAM lyricist, Pete Brown, "Some may come and some may go, but the Art School dance goes on forever." Well that certainly applies to little Sarah.

A fantastic glimpse into the lives of real D/s couples in various stages of their relationships. Ms. Rika breaks through the emotions and issues involved and gets to the core of a dominant's responsibilities within the power dynamic in an interesting and compelling way. Her "CERAF" concept makes sense and is easily followed by anyone - including those new to this type of relationship. While her first book, "Uniquely Rika," is not required reading prior to this one, it certainly helps lay the foundation and provide an overall understanding of a female lead relationship. I highly encourage anyone interested in this way of life to read both books.

Lends amazing clarity to a non-traditional relationship!!

I thoroughly enjoyed Ms Rika's first book Uniquely Rika and now this one. She has a very positive view of what a great D/s relationship can be - and is able to show us that through the couples she's used as examples.

Both her books have yielded several "ah-ha" moments for me… I don't necessarily agree with every single thing she says, but she does provide a lot of food for thought, and her clarity is quite amazing. I have not found anyone who can break down what makes a D/s relationship work like she can. And I use what I've learnt on a daily basis with my significant other.

If the subject matter she writes about fascinates you as it does me, you can continue to follow the further evolution of her thoughts on FetLife where she has a discussion group called Rika's Lair.

Firmly grounded in real world relationship dynamics

If you are looking for a realistic viewpoint of workable female led relationships, this is it. Order "Uniquely Rika" along with this one and read it first - they should be sold as a set, for each one imparts it's own knowledge. For years I had read femdom books where something didn't seem "quite right" - it was hard to distinguish what was punishment, reward, work, and play in D/s relationship. Ms Rika makes it all clear, cutting through murky relationship waters to show practitioners, and would to be practitioners of FLR's a clearer path to success. This and "Uniquely Rika" are the two best books on FLR I've ever read! Bravo!

He relies on Mac OS X both at work and at home because it is a robust, flexible platform for programming, networking, and design.Over the past 12 years, John has written books on Mac OS X, iPhone development, Adobe Creative Suite, Linux, networking, and computer security. He currently manages the application development team in the Office of Sponsored Programs at The Ohio State University. Snow Leopard Visual Guide with a little bit of MacBook thrown in

The title of this book and the editorial description are both lame. This is not a book about using (just) your MacBook - but, rather, a Snow Leopard-specific introduction to using any Mac. The only thing that is really MacBook specific - vs iMac or Mac Pro - is the brief illustration that shows what the various ports are.

This book is only for you if you have an Intel Mac running Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6).

Note, too, that every Mac comes with iLife, yet this book does not make mention of any of the iLife applications.

While beautifully laid out and illustrated with screen captures, the editorial content of the book seems to have not been reviewed by a Mac expert, as there are numerous issues throughout that are either awkward, or not appropriate for a typical user.

In the first pages, the author notes the use of context menus via clicking a right mouse button, but does not note that with certain Apple mice, the right button must be enabled in the System Preferences first. He then talks about control-clicking (the way to get a secondary click with a single / left mouse button) on the trackpad - and does not mention the more convenient trackpad methods until much later in Chapter 8.

He notes that folders can be dragged to the dock, but does not point out that they can only be dragged to the right side of the dock only. This is unfortunately typical of the almost-correct instructions throughout the book that a knowledgeable reviewer / editor might have helped smooth out.

On page 23, in a sidebar box called "Remember your Gestures!", Ray talks about four-finger swipe, etc., on the trackpad - but he does not introduce these until pages 213-214 in Chapter 8. Even there, they are not adequately described. Sort of hard to "remember" them on page 23 if you don't see it for another 200 pages.

Chapter 2 contains way too much information on extremely unusual network situations, breaking the flow of the whole book. Most of the content of this chapter belongs in an Appendix in my opinion. Much later, on page 150, Ray talks about sharing an internet connection in a way that most users would not understand ... or require.

Chapter 10 describes MobileMe backup before the more fundamental Time Machine backup.

The description of the keychain, which saves passwords, does not mention the importance of a secure login password to protect the (login) keychain. Describing Address Book, Ray implies that a name can only be a member of one group, not describing dragging into multiple groups and opt-clicking on a name to see which groups it belongs to. The description of displaying calendars in iCal is incorrect - suggesting that selecting a calendar displays its content, rather than checking the checkbox next to it.

The section on external monitors does not describe the designed-for-MacBook 24" Apple display or how to operate with the laptop lid closed and with the external monitor as the only active monitor.

The Time Machine pages do not describe at all how to restore files - or how Time Machine can intelligently recognize certain applications, such as Mail, iCal or Address Book and restore individual mail messages, addresses, etc.

So, after not describing fully or correctly many of the basics of using Snow Leopard, Ray then goes into describing how to access the LaunchDaemon lists to delete services, something that most users should stay far away from.

The description of installing a new hard drive (to replace the existing one) is unrealistic unless the drive is dead - suggesting that one reinstall Snow Leopard from the original installation disks. There is no mention of the more normal choices of (1) boot from the install disk and do a full restore from your Time Machine backup disk, or (2) attach the new disk via a USB or firewire cable and clone the old disk onto the new one before physical installation.

There is nothing in the book on how to burn data onto a CD or DVD via a Finder Burn Folder. There is no mention of how to create a zip file (via the Compress command in the file context menu).

In summary, a lot of good content that is beautifully displayed, however there are also a lot of errors and omissions and inappropriate material.

The Must Have Book for OS X Mavericks

I am a new Mac user and find this book to be my "guide". The book is clearly written and has great illustrations that guide you through the various aspects of OS X. The index is complete which allows you to find specific topics.

I would have given a 5 star rating but...

The info. provided is very good, very helpful, and I liked it. But...I didn't realize that the print would be so small and therefore difficult for me to read. I have to get out my strong magnifier to read it. That is my problem ( am a senior citizen) and no fault of the seller.
I would definitely recommend it to others.

It is short, but to the point; easy to read; full of needed information; helps you to understand yourself; and it gives you fundamentals you will need before actual trades are entered into whether it’s a demo/practice account or a live account. As a former student of Miss Noriega, I must say I was enlightened by this book. The concept of YOU meeting You, and the heart-mind relationship really stuck in my mind (although I’ve heard it before). I’ve been through the emotional roller coaster of making lots of money and losing lots of money within a matter of a few minutes. Trading is a matter of one’s total self, being disciplined and under control at all times. This book is a must-read, especially for newbies. Read it over and over until you get in your spirit. Use it as a Tool to your success as a trader… Happy Trading!
