Excellent Beginner's Introduction to Raising Guppies, the Novice's Best First Pet Fish

The author has clearly worked hard to provide a useful handbook for the novice fish hobbyist. This book has a lot of good tips and is written in a manner which parents and teens can utilize equally well.

My first pet fish was probably a goldfish I won at a school carnival when I was about six years old. That spurred me into learning about the hobby and options for expansion. Soon I had a few guppies and catfish. Not long after that and I had what seemed to me a fish farm. I wish that then I had had the opportunity to read a book such as Guppy Care & Breeding for Beginners.

This 46-page booklet seems to address every question that a novice tropical fish hobbyist might ask, plus several issues that they would forget to ask in logically arranged, comprehensive chapters:

2 Create the Perfect Environment

Where Guppy Care & Breeding is most useful, is at providing enough information that the beginner can visit the local pet fish store and discuss the issues that are fundamental to success. To that objective, I would suggest that new tropical fish hobbyists also buy two other books on aquarium fish keeping.

A book written by Becky Wolff, Set Up Your Own Saltwater Aquarium! Would be a nice companion, because of the detailed pricing data comparison sheet for a Freshwater Aquarium.

A second book that would be helpful is Aquarium Guides Tropical Fish - Species Guide by Kevin Wilson. This book provides excellent details on fish that may, and on fish that definitely are not good fish to keep with guppies.

Although some nice color photographs are included in Guppy Care & Breeding for Beginners, the book would be even more useful than it is, if another several pictures are added. In such case, I would have given five stars, for this is a comprehensive book otherwise.

I look forward to reading a follow-on handbook by this author, oriented for the experienced fish hobbyist.

As indicated above, I believe this is an excellent introduction for people considering starting aquarium tropical fish. And what better fish to build confidence in a nature lover's ability than guppies?

Comprensive Guide - Beautifully written for all ages

Many, many years ago I was an avid tropical fish enthusiast. Now, my eleven year old daughter has taken up the hobby. I've been coaching her. Caring for our fish has been a great way for us to connect.

I read this book to keep me up-to-date regarding aquarium basics. I found the book to be a great resource.

I do have couple pieces of constructive criticism:

In Chapter 7, "I Can't See Anything," there is a discussion regarding lighting options and the four types of algae that one might face when working with aquariums. In touching on brown algae, the author writes, "Brown algae leaves an ugly brown coating on most surfaces." The author details the causes of the other three types of algae, but says nothing about the cause of brown algae. Brown algae often blooms right when the "cycle" of a new aquarium is approaching its end. Someone new to the hobby could be very alarmed when this brown muck suddenly appears on everything! Really, if it's the cycling process, its no big deal and if you happen to have some algae eaters on hand, they will clean it up rather quickly (we had three otocinclus algae eaters when our tank finished cycling and they ate all the brown algae within three days).

My second suggestion is that it would be really nice if more pictures had been included in this book. The pictures that are in the book are beautiful.

So, to conclude, this is a great book for all ages wanting to pursue the hobby of caring for guppies. Try out this book and enjoy your hobby!

A really good book...with a lot of errors.

This review is for CMOS Projects and Experiments Fun with the 4093IC by Newton C. Braga. I have the 339pg edition from 1999 and the cover is as pictured.

This is a hard review to write because I have split feelings about this book. It's a good book with a few big problems. Before writing this review I read the entire book and built about half the circuits in it. If it was possible I would have given it 3-1/2 stars.

The Table of Contents is available in the preview as so I will not duplicate it here. It lists all 135 projects in this book so it is worth reading.

As you would suspect the book starts off with an in depth explanation of the 4093IC and the basic circuit building blocks that will be used throughout the book. As of Aug 2015 the 4093IC is still readily available and very inexpensive.

Then the book moves right into the projects, the fast flow is good and gets you building circuits by page 31. Each project is given a brief but accurate description of how the circuit functions as well as a schematic. Breadboard layouts are not provided so the reader must be of the skill level to read basic schematics and build breadboard versions from them. This may be the most important sentence in my review, if you can't build basic circuits from a schematic you will be totally lost.

While there are 135 projects in the book you will find many are very redundant so the actual number of ideas is far less. An example of this is you may use the same basic logic to drive a piezo speaker, a speaker via a 2N2222, and a larger speaker via a TIP31. The circuit will be identical or almost identical with just the output stage changed, so this makes for three projects.

This said, I was not disappointed with the variety of projects in the book. It is a good representation of the versatility of the 4093IC and the things that can be done with it. In a way this repetition is good because it spells out exactly how to use that particular circuit in several ways, but in a way it is bad because the repetition makes the book less interesting.

I have to say I was very disappointed in the sheer number or errors, typos, the broken schematics. At a glance things look good but when you start to actually build the circuits you discover a lot of errors.

To give you an idea of the errors and omissions that are common through the whole book I will include a few examples. On page 24 the arrow head is missing from inside the transistor. On page 32 C1 is labeled .022 to .047 but neglects to say if it's pF, nF, or uF. On page 111 R2 is listed as a different value in the parts list then in the schematic. On page 120 it states the project beeps and flashes but it doesn't contain a speaker. On page 131 the TIP120 is labeled TIP11S. On page 139 C1 is listed on the parts list but there is no C1 in the schematic. And this is just a few, there are many, many, more.

So given the number of errors I can't recommend this book to beginners as it will probably just frustrate them. If you have a little experience most the errors are pretty obvious and it's not too hard to figure out how to get things to work.

Moving on. Given the age of the book many of the projects are getting dated. No surprise, about half the projects in the lamp and LED section are for lamps. Lamps are rarely used in modern hobby electronics. In almost all cases a 12V LED (or Led + resistor) can be substituted for the incandescent lamp. If you feel the need for the actual lamps I found the one for a 2002-2010 Chevy Trailblazer speedometer back light from works well. It's small, bright, vibration resistant, good to 12v, and it's leads are breadboard friendly. And it can be bought on Amazon at the same time as this book, search for the AISN B012FS6LLG or B00RZ4YRS0.

To my surprise many of the circuits contain high voltages so many projects in this book aren't appropriate for children unless they have proper supervision. Many of the these high voltage projects, like a relay driven light, can be easily modified to work with lower voltages. But others like a high voltage florescent lamp driver can not be made safer because by their nature they are high voltage.

As not to dwell on the negative too much I need to say I actually enjoyed this book. The author tried hard to take a single IC and do a lot of fun things with it, and for the most part he succeeded. The circuits are so simple the errors an omissions didn't make for a bad experience, more like slight puzzle. And while some things in the book are a little dated, anyone looking for a book on a 4000 series IC probably isn't looking for cutting edge technology.

Now a word on price; I know reviews are supposed to avoid this subject because it changes, but when it comes down to it price is one of the big factors in buying a book, especially a older one like this this. I paid $30 for this book (used) and after reading it I would say that is worth about half what I paid. Now, if there was a Second Edition with the most errors corrected I would happily pay $30 or more for that and would rate it at 5 stars.

This book is now available on Kindle; I ask if anyone reads the Kindle version to please leave a comment as to if the Kindle version contains a lot of errors.

Good Reading

Although the book does contain some typos and mismatched schematics with text the author does a fine job of introducing the 4093 and progresses logically to circuits of increased function or complexity. The beginning chaptors provide an intro and methods of interface to other devices. Some of the bistable circuits were difficult to get working reliably but an overall well authored book and referance. I would purchase it again.

Well worth the price

This book was recommended to me by a co-worker to help understand the course material. While it wasn't the course textbook it did contain all of the course topics. It provided numerous examples and clear discussions.
I recommend that any student interested in custom analog or digital IC design get it. I would also say, from my colleagues input, that it is also a very good reference book.
In summary, it was well worth the price!

Hydraulic practitioners point of view

The book is a real feast for those engineers who want to understand the nuts and bolts of the hydraulic modelling. Importanly it provides a very nice balance between the underlaying theory of the numerical analysis, tuned to assist in solution of hydraulic problems. While unfortunattely to many engineers tend only to ask ".. give me the model to solve the problem .." this book is for those who aim to be masters in their trade and fully undertstand the computational aspects in hydraulics. The authors obvious experience in lecturing (and patience in building the story) comes accross as all the complex derivations are logical and easy to follow. The fact that the book has the accompanied software, illustrated with many excellent examples, makes the reading even more exciting because it gives the reader the confidence of undertaking complex calculations. While the software is an excellent tool for the hydraulic analysis its structure and logic used to develop its building blocks is a masterpiece. Author should be commended to his dedication and skill to convey the complex story in a way that excites others to learn more and excell in their own craft.

About the Author
Alex Irvine’s novels include Buyout, The Narrows, A Scattering of Jades, and the novelization of the film Iron Man 2. The potential was there...

I was excited when I first picked this book up over the weekend. I love origin stories, and was interested how this one would tie in with the various continuities.

What I ended up reading was only a few steps away from being a jumbled mess.

Here are my main complaints:
1.) There is no sense of when events occur in relation to each other, other than that events in later chapters occur after those that occur in earlier chapters (for the most part). It was annoying trying to figure out if eons had passed or just days (or if events are occurring at the same time).
2.) The number of references to different continuities can get annoying. "Project Generation One"? Really? It felt like all the continuities got mixed up in a stew, but not everything mixed together properly.
3.) Did X transformer really just get thrown in for a random 1 paragraph mention? Why? How does this advance the plot? Does it reveal any new character motivations? Or is it just fanboy service?
4.) Alpha Trion's role as Yoda seemed ill-conceived. If he really was one of the 13 primes, shouldn't he have known all about Omega Supreme and how to activate him? Why didn't he reveal all about the Matrix, Vector Sigma, et al to Optimus in order to assist in the war? He seems eternally shackled to a caste that he was forced into by Sentinel Prime (who was the best character by far... actual character development!!! Shocker!).
5.) There's little indication after the early part of the book which character is being focused on. The points of view seem to jump around quite a bit, to the point where you're like "Megatron sounds like a good guy!" "Oh, wait, maybe that's Optimus..."

If the book were interspersed with vignettes of Sentinel Prime's thoughts, showing his development from a stagnant, cowardly leader, through his imprisonment and torture, out to his realization and subsequent redemption and death... that would be a much-stronger book.

I wanted to like this book. I really did. I just wish it was better-edited.

An Amazing Read!

First off, I've read all of the reviews on this book and do agree that there are a few errors and mishaps, but besides those, this book is on par with the Transformers comics I've read. It's a pleasant mixture of Megatron Origin with Orion Pax as a co-star. Now, this novel tells the origins of the War for Cybertron games and very loosely to the new Transformers Prime TV series on The Hub.

It doesn't really tie into the origins of Transformers G1-G2, Beast Wars and Beast Machines, Robots in Disguise, the Unicron Trilogy, and Transformers Animated. It does mention some characters from those shows, but it's still a different continuity all together. It does touch upon the AllSpark being shot into deep space like in Bayformers.

I didn't find Transformers Exodus to be a huge rough draft as someone claimed, but the minor errors don't hurt the plot that much.

If you want a gripping, exciting origin story on Optimus and Megatron this book is for you.

This is a joke, right?

I'll start with the positives about this book:

1. It was not written by Alan Dean Foster.
2. It was not written by Simon Furman.
3. There are NO humans at all in this book. (Yes, Hasbro, it's true: we want *robots* in our robot stories, fancy that!)

That's....uhhhh, about it.

Problems with this book, in random order--I am keeping anything potentially spoilery to within the first 50 or so pages:

1. Editing is non-existent. The prose was flabby and there's no real sense of conflict or scene. Scenes will 'happen', set off with hard-hiatuses, but will have no conflict or resolution in them. Things are repeatedly restated, taking up pagespace and time that might have better gone to setting, characterization and plot development.

2. Pacing is s-l-o-w. It's a bit over 250 pages but it seems to last forever (not helped, of course, by the flabby prose).

3. A lot of the characterization makes no sense. Alpha Trion is some spooky dude who keeps the entire history of Cybertron. We're told he can't read the future clearly, only glimpses. Yet he's...regularly befuddled by actions that have already happened--that should, technically, be in his little magic book. Orion's emotional shifts are laughably volatile--he's suspicious, but then he's chumming it up. And in a 'canon' that says (*several times*) that new mechs sort of wash up by the Well, why does Megatron keep calling Orion 'brother'? What does that even mean in this? (Worldbuilding fail!) Megatron, who is allegedly uneducated, is a rhetorical genius with an extensive vocabulary. Orion is a lowly clerk who gets away with internal sabotage without even getting punished by his boss, much less having, oh, like an internal qualm? And for those who love Optimus? Yeah, one of his big psychological turning point moments is that he wants to go to an amusement park but can't. The angst! The pathos!! Wait. This is the guy who becomes Optimus Prime?

(And don't even get me started on the forced cameos like Barricade, Blackout, Cliffjumper, etc.)

4. What canon is this? It directly contradicts movieverse, though it involves elements of IDW's Megatron Origin. One of my friends suggests it's a prequel for the upcoming cartoon, another says it's background for the recently released video game, but then admits it has nothing to do with the plot of the game other than the notion of 'Dark Energon'. So...is this a microcontinuity? It seems to bill itself as game-canon. Is it it's own thing? Why can't I tell? (If this is a harbinger of the quality of the upcoming cartoon? Count me *out*.)

5. It...contradicts itself at many points. I'll give you just one example.

Page 78. "Not even Starscream, who had spent much of his scientific career in the labs....". Okay, Starscream = scientist, right?

Then let's go to page 158. "See what?" Starscream asked. Neither Starscream nor Megatron were scientists."

Wait, what?

The real killer is that there are some really interesting concepts that could have been very cool if handled...better. The author clearly has no grasp, and certainly no love of the beloved Transformers characters, and it shows in every tedious page.

Look, I'm a long time fan of Transformers--I was one of the original Generation 1 fans, back 26 years ago. I've stood by this franchise through a lot. But this book is turning me into one of those fans who will insist that this is not 'my' canon. This is like...some sort of tolerance test by Hasbro to see how much they can get away with or something. Either that or this is some Thanatos-drive cry for attention from the franchise.

I've been led to believe that Hasbro's pretty involved and controlling of their franchise. Yet they let the sloppy writing, the bad characterization, the internal inconsistencies go?

In short? If you want to read some good Transformers fiction, and I *never* thought I'd say this, but you'd be better off looking at fanfiction than this hack drivel. I want my money back. No, heck with that: I want my Transformers back.
