Read it, since it's hot!

You need to read this now! There. I've said it.

This is the first, of what I'm certain, will be a long and successful series. It's a brand new twist on the oldest fight around. This I not Dan Brown's Angels & Demons, that's for sure. The main characters, Trinity & Malachi, draw you in and before you know it - it's 3a and your going: "but when's the next one coming out?!?!" There's a little bit for every genre fan; romance, fight scenes, drama, intrigue, steamy love scenes, and an underlying good v evil plot.

I highly recommend it, and look forward to the ext installment!

Good Beginning to a New Series

I must begin with saying that I did enjoy this book, and would recommend reading it. The main characters Malachi and Trinity have a refreshing mystical and instant connection. This connection is written such that it keeps one reading to find from where it stems. The secondary characters support the story line, and their interactions create several avenues that one hopes will lead to more stand alone books in this series.

The only problem I have with this book is the use of tenses. The book switches from first person, to third person and back again, sometimes within only a paragraph or two. This seems to be heavier in the beginning and gets better the farther along the book goes. Usually, this would stop me from reading a book since I find it very distracting. However, the story line was enough to get me to over look this, and I kept reading until the end.

In conclusion, I suggest buying this book, and personally will buy the next in the series.

Intriquing!

I have not read anything in this genre for 35 years as they all seemed to so repetitious and formulaic with no real plot and undeveloped characters. This one, however, had all of that and more. I loved the use of lore and legend that this author used and it was developed so richly that I didn't know if I was reading fact or fiction. That for me is a definition of a good read.

It was very imaginative and the plot and sub-plots made this one a real page-turner. I'm very much looking forward to the next one.

Hot Viking Sex!

Alek Lindqvist doesn't take no for an answer and when he captures Maya, the beautiful virgin and daughter of the chieftan, he will stop at nothing until he gets his fill of the luscious, sweet maiden by first claiming her virginity (but he doesn't stop there!).

The sex scenes were scorchers, the storyline is very well thought out and you will instantly find yourself in a love/hate relationship with Alek (who is a ridiculously hot Viking). I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for something different (and something VERY hot!)

Love Conquers

This was the first Viking story I've read, and I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised at how Ms. Lane wrote the story. Her style is delicate, soft, romantic even. A virgin was taken, and a heart was won over by a domineering man. Their relationship started as something else, but quickly grew into love. I really like how she told the story. It could have been a brutal encounter, but it was so much more than that. If you're looking for a historic romance, I dare say you won't find a better one than this.

So Good!

I am so glad that I picked up a copy of this book. Wow, this was one HOT story. There are quite a few different scenes that are just scorching hot and the raw passion between the characters is intense. Best of all while this is a shorter erotic story it didn't feel rushed and I was really satisfied with the way it ended. This story definitely made me a fan of this author.

Not a very good book

All pharm textbooks fall into the trap of being neither textbook nor reference book. They want to just explain pharmacodynamics and end up like a drug guide. This book gets bogged down more than others. It does not offer much in terms of the textbook side, and it bogs down in the drug book side. Poor graphics. I ended up leaving this book on the shelf and got the Lehne book, which is good.

About the Author
John Chaffee is Distinguished Service Professor of History and Asian and Asian American Studies and directs the Institute for Asia and Asian Diaporas at Binghamton University. He received his BA from Swarthmore College and his MA and PhD from the University of Chicago. He is the author of The Thorny Gates of Learning in Sung China: A Social History of Examinations (1985, 1995), The Branches of Heaven: a History of the Sung Imperial Clan (1999) and co-editor of Neo-Confucian Education: The Formative Stage (1989). He is currently writing a book on the history of the Muslim maritime communities on the southeast coast of China from the Tang to early Ming. He has taught at Binghamton University since 1980.

The Undoing

When I first picked up The Unleashing, I was thrown a bit by the dynamic in the Crow house. All the women with their varying degrees of, lets face it, craziness took a bit for me to get used to. I was happy that I stuck the first book out, because once I understood the ebb and flow of the other women's personalities the humor of the situations really came to the forefront.

That same humor flows into the second book The Undoing. I think just by understanding the writing style and the characters, I ended up enjoying The Undoing even more than the first book. I found the antics between the Crows even more funny. I loved the somewhat naive seriousness of The Protectors. Their love of books was charming and the way they thought themselves smarter than other clans was hilarious.

Jace was a stand-out Crow for me in The Unleashing. Her penchant for hiding in seemingly random places was intriguing. I wondered what her deal was, in a good way I assure you. So I loved the The Undoing was her book. What I loved even more was that her quirkiness was not a result of her tragic past the lead to her becoming a Crow. That kind of closed off manner that she has is just the way she is, and I liked that the point of this book wasn't trying to "change" who Jace was. Yes, there are some characters who don't understand Jace and want to get her out of her shell, but the core group of people who matter to Jace and who care about Jace in turn would never think of changing her.

Ski was a great love interest for Jace because he sought to understand her so he could fit into her life rather than trying to make him fit into hers. There was attraction between the two of them from the beginning but because of Jace's past experience with her ex she's hesitant to start anything with anyone. I loved that there was really no pressure on either side for something to happen, things just developed naturally.

I'd say that it's probably wise to read the first book in the series before jumping into this one just because one of the main story arcs from the first book flows over to The Undoing. I think readers are well aware at the end of the first book that things are not yet taken care of, even if the characters aren't so aware yet. The same thing happens in this book. There are definite story threads that are dealt with yet no necessarily completely resolved but I will go so far as to say there's nothing cliffhanger-like about the ending by any means.

Overall, this has started to be a series that I really look forward to. There's just the right amount of humor coupled with some very interesting Norse mythology. I liked seeing Kera and Vig from the first book still get a good amount of page time, yet we see them from Jace and Ski's points of view and it's always interesting kind of turning the tables in how a character is perceived. This series is highly recommended. Plus, there's a not-to-be-missed party at the Crow house!

The Good, The Bad and Everything In Between

What happens when you take trademark Laurenston humor and action, mixed with a ton of Norse mythology and a dash of romance? This series is what happens. Ms. Laurenston’s latest urban fantasy series is hard to describe but a hoot to read.

The premise: The second book in the series begins a few weeks after the first book ends. The Crows, a group of women who have been given a second chance at life by serving the nordic goddess Skuld, are just finding out that Gullveig, the big Bad introduced in the first book, isn’t as vanquished as they thought she was. There are nine Clans that were formed by various gods and goddesses to work towards preventing Ragnarok, aka the apocalypse, or at least an incredibly bad day. The Crows are one of the Clans, but they all play a part in this story, as well as cameos by several gods including (dumb as a hammer) Thor, Odin, Tyr and Freyja. This is the overarching storyline that drives it all, and while there’s plenty of exposition given to get the reader up to speed when necessary, I do recommend reading the first book.

Jace is my soul sister-Crow: Jacinda “Jace” Berisha, is the sister-Crow at the heart of this entry and we get a glimpse of her first Life as the wife of a crazy bastard cult leader. From the prologue on, I was solidly in Jace’s corner. It also didn’t hurt that Jace is an anti-social introvert who will take a good book and her dog Lev over (most) people. Frankly, she’s a girl after my own heart.

Ski’s hot and nerdy, just like I like ‘em: Danski “Ski” Eriksen, one of the Protectors, wears glasses, is just as into books as his bethren but a better at the social game than anyone else. He’s nerdy but self-aware, a great combination. He also needs Jace’s help in translating some old Russian books he and his Protector brothers found. Jace captivates him but she’s a bit oblivious and I liked that alot. Ski’s a great gamma type of hero - as essentially the protector of his Protector brothers, he’s perfectly equipped to deal with their introverted, absent-minded professor ways. This also makes him the perfect man to love Jace.

That dash of romance: I think that going into this read with the mindset of urban fantasy rather than a more traditional paranormal romance helped my enjoyment because my expectations were tempered. When I say a dash, while each book is anchored by a love story, it’s the big picture and the day-to-day lives and interactions between all these different warriors and gods that drives the narrative. The romance is like a tasty, sexy garnish rather than the meat of the tale.

This story is clearly unfolding over several books, and there’s alot of moving parts at work. It can make some scenes with alot of explanations of the Gods and their relationship a bit unwieldy. That said, I truly enjoyed getting to see more of the ‘verse, the different characters, as well as deepening the relationships established in the first book.

The Bottom Line
I always enjoy a chance to visit one of Ms. Laurenston’s diverse and hella-funny worlds, and The Undoing builds and expands on the first book so well, I can’t wait to see what’s next. The Crows are moving up my list of favorites and if you’re into urban fantasy/paranormal romances, I encourage you to give Ms. Laurenston’s (who also publishes under the name G.A. Aiken) books a shot.

Great fun, hard to put down.

I was not as fond of the Call of Crows series as I have been of other books by Shelly Laurenston, in part because all the references to Norse mythology were not familiar and the names are weird. (However a Great Courses course on the History of the Vikings has helped there.) In any case I have loved Ms Laurenston's books in the past. I am glad I did. The Undoing is great! Shelly Laurenston always delivers great characters and books which are thick with both plot and humor. Her Crows are not very different from the Roller Blade teams of her shifter stories and the humor and trash talk between the various factions of the gods' human minions are Laurenston at her best. I can hardly wait for the next book in this series and won't worry all that much about which god wants what when. Ultimately they are all sort of dicks but what are you going to do.
