About the Author

W. Rodi is an expert in the field of turbulent flows and on the application of calculation procedures to a wide range of engineering and environmental problems (hydraulics, waste-water treatment, building aerodynamics, vehicle and aircraft aerodynamics, turbomachinery, process engineering). He has published extensively on these topics during the course of his distinguished academic career. His book Turbulence Models and Their Application in Hydraulics appeared earlier in the IAHR Monograph series.

M. Uhlmann is Professor of numerical modeling in fluid mechanics and head of the Turbulent Flows group within the Institute for Hydromechanics at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany. His research and publications centre on dynamics of coherent structures in turbulent flows, multi-phase flows, numerical simulation techniques and high performance computing.

This is a must read for everyone who is in a relationship, regardless of their view regarding monogamy. One of the best, if not the best self help relationship book on the market. Chapters dealing with all aspects of everyday relating to your partner of choice, don't let the title fool you, you don't need to be a s**t to gain essential insight into relationships of every kind.

This is a wonderful book explaining the love that can be shared by multiple people in an open sexual relationship! It does not promote any sexuality but promotes love and being nonjudgmental! Each person loves differently and freaks is not a word to be used in any lifestyle! Each person has some kind of freak in them, so judging should not be allowed. Love is what makes the world go round!!

Not for the Close-Minded

Considered to be almost the Bible of polyamory, this classic work is not perfect, but is so "fat" with useful information and anecdotes it doesn't have to be.

The writing style is very readable and not wonky. In part it is a memoir of "this is how things worked for us," rather than a how-to guide.

I think that people in every relationship style could benefit from this book, but those in more traditionally shaped ones may feel a little butthurt by the inference that polyamory is better/healthier (though the authors state repeatedly that monogamy is perfectly okay, too).

I am not sure if my favorite chapter is the one on Jealousy, or the one on Sex and Pleasure, but I do know I am going to suggest that some of my monogamous friends read at least the latter one. The chapters on communication may seem like common sense, but they are also issues that fail in relationships that fail. I will be rereading frequently.

Kevin Lucia: For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face - 1 Corinthians 13:12. It's the idea that in this world, we only see each other “through a glass, darkly” – we don't fully see each other, or understand each other, or the world around us, because we can't: we have finite minds, trying to understand the infinite. But someday – “then face to face” – we'll know all there is to know, and see each other clearly. Again, my take on the supernatural is that strange and explained things happen every day – things slip through – and we can't understand them, and won't understand them, until someday, perhaps in another world, things are revealed.

Tell us more about your lead character?

Kevin Lucia: Kevin Ellison, former English teacher at All Saints High, has just retired from teaching to take over his recently deceased father's used bookstore, Arcane Delights. A fledgling author himself, in prepping the store for its grand reopening, he discovers a strange box of donations he doesn't remember getting. In it he finds a journal of stories about Clifton Heights – someone trying their hand at fiction? The return of Quiet Horror

When the owner of Arcane Delights, a rare and used bookstore, uncovers a mysterious journal, he learns some dark secrets about his hometown of Clifton Heights.
Much like Charles L. Grant's The Orchard, this collection of four novellas disguised as a novel by the wrap-around story of Arcane Delights.
And the similarity does not end there. For Clifton Heights shares "unreal estate" with Grant's Oxrun Station, another small town where shadows lurk.
Lucia writes the same quiet, lingering horror that Grant was the master of, and he does the master proud here. And if that wasn't enough, he also invokes Robert W. Chambers' King in Yellow, creating a heady concoction of the cosmic and the quiet that is nothing short of brilliant.
Subtle and disturbing, these tales will haunt your dreams for many nights to come.

Highest possible recommendation. I plan on reading everything Mr. Lucia writes. Clifton Heights is calling, and I find I must return.

Fantastic collection of stories that are interconnected!

THROUGH A MIRROR, DARKLY is a collection of four tales, bookended by scenes in the Arcane Delights bookstore. The Arcane Delights has recently been taken over by Kevin Ellison, whose father had owned it before his decline into Alzheimer's. Renovating the shop after a flood had hit their town of Clifton Hights, Kevin's part-time assistant, Cassie Tillman informs him of recent book deliveries--among them, a plain box that was deposited on his desk, without any clue as to where it came from.

When Kevin opens a "journal" of sorts, he has no idea of what he is getting into. Within this journal are the 4 stories presented--each tale taking place in Clifton Hights, and each blending into one another in some way. The beginning and ending at the bookshop brings everything around full-circle, and is so expertly handled, that I didn't even realize all of the connections until AFTER I had finished the entire book.

"Suffer the Children Come Unto Me" is a tale of Father Ward, and centers around mysterious children, sacrifices, and an old school bus that simply doesn't belong in the here and now....

"Yellow Cab" had a distinct Lovecraftian feel to it, for me. The story of a boy who had everything going for him, and how he ended up driving a yellow cab, with passengers that only get off at "particular" destinations. His story is particularly gripping, especially when we see how he comes into his new position.

"Admit One" seemed to be almost an "unselfish love story" built into a much larger picture. This one was very emotive and poignant in the end. It was beautifully, almost poetically written, and the feelings transcribed really jumped off the page.

"And I Watered it, With Tears" is the last separate story in the collection, before the closing scene at Arcane Delights. This was one that I'll have some trouble forgetting anytime soon. If you deny reality, and lock it away with medications, what happens when the medications are gone and the reality finally resurfaces? This is one of the more gruesome stories here, in terms of content, and yet utterly emotional all throughout.

I honestly couldn't point out to even one story that I didn't like to some extent, and 3 of the 4 tales I would individually give five-star ratings to. I've already purchased another book by author Kevin Lucia, as I am very taken with his quiet horror approach, and the way he so cleverly ingrained each of these stories into another by more than just the location. This is an author to watch for in the future!

Arcane Delights and Surprises & Secrets

Horror anthologies of yesteryear provided a wrap around, consider our base of reality bringing all the tales within the movie anthology under one umbrella. Through A Mirror, Darkly by Kevin Lucia follows the same tradition with the protagonist Kevin Ellison exploring a strange box of books apparently slipping his mind. Within the cardboard box is a journal of stories centering around his town of Clifton Heights and things he never knew, things many would wish never to know.
Mr. Lucia's is composed of four novellas bringing to light the underbelly of society, those falling thru the cracks, the unwanted, the inward dying leading to an uncertain future. The writing is rich in character, journeys to be completed and issues to be resolved. They will lead four separate protagonists to understand the meaning of a home called Carcosa. Welcome Father Ward, a disturbed war vet who knows pure evil; Mitch Reynolds, an educated man haunted by memories keeping him driving a yellow cab; Bobby Lee, a loser and bouncing in jobs, using what he has to help another find her peace in a dying life; and Andrew, a man who's lost it and his only son. These four stories will find their tales told in the journal read from the man running Arcane Delights. They are just enough to wonder at life's mysteries and where the down in life really do go. In this place, it's a strange, dark place called Carcosa.
This writing is excellent and recommended for all readers to feed their imagination.

I feel like this is a hard subject to teach

Although the book seems to attempt to demonstrate how one would go about designing, selecting materials, manufacturing, marketing, safety, etc. Its really not easy to grasp such concepts without hands one experience or involvement. The book is easy to read and does provide some really good detail on benchmarking materials, intellectual property / patents, and safety. It just doesn't seem like you can teach design even if you attempt to do it through concepts and case studies. Also the book suggest design via a materials approach but this is misleading because it doesn't look at it from a material science viewpoint rather what materials are available with this property at what cost.
