Better than the Magic Lantern series

I actually picked up this book based on the reviews here, and I must say, I was not disappointed. I had previously used the Magic Lantern series of guides on an earlier model, and this book is FAR more informative. My impression of the Magic Lanterns was that they were simply a slightly more detailed version of the Canon camera manual itself. This book, on the other hand, goes a step farther, focusing not only on the functions of the camera itself, but also providing useful information on APPLYING those functions. Lots of information presented in easily-digestible sections, along with full-color photgraphs throughout to demonstrate the particular topics being discussed.

This book also contains material that provides a good introduction to novice photgraphers on basic photography concepts like exposure, and provides a good brief intro to beginner and experienced photgrapher alike on digital photography specifically.

In short, this book is great for the novice photographer, the novice digital photogrpaher, or the experienced photographer looking to maximize his or her enjoyment and understanding of a sophisticated piece of techinolgoy, the 50D.

indispensible field guide

i love my canon 50d, a sophisticated camera with a myriad of probable functions that i'd rather not memorize and so the guide is most handy and well presented. it's my second book 'cause i left my other in a plane and i'm glad i have it so i can review it often. it goes with me wherever i take my camera and i highly recommend it (better than the canon book supplied with the camera).

Nicely Written

Charlotte writes very clearly. I like especially the section on color space and color balance. The 50D allows you to select picture style so you should look at this closely. I did some strobe shots of an actor and found they were too saturated. I had set the camera on "standard". You might want to shoot strobe on "neutral" to see the difference. But Charlotte does show how to do this. Shooting weddings is one thing, with flash on camera. But shooting in the studio with big strobes requires testing the color temperature and saturation.

The distinguished group of contributors examine the theory and practice of justice and law in Roman imperial wars and administration; Gentili's use of Roman materials; the influence on Gentili of Vitoria and Bodin and his impact on Grotius and Hobbes; and the ideas and influence of Gentili and other major thinkers from the 16th to the 18th centuries on issues such as preventive self-defence, punishment, piracy, Europe's political and mercantile relations with the Ottoman Empire, commerce and trade, European and colonial wars and peace settlements, reason of state, justice, and the relations between natural law and observed practice in providing a normative and operational basis for international relations and what became international law.

This book explores how both the theory and the practice of international politics was framed in ways that built on these Roman private law and public law foundations, including concepts of rights. This history of ideas has continuing importance as European ideas of international law and empire have become global, partly accepted and partly contested elsewhere in the world.

It collects 250 poems written by Muhammad Hafiz (132089), the most popular and highly revered poet in Persian history, and renders them into a fresh translation from the Farsi. Like Rumi, Hafiz writes out of the Sufi tradition, and his work bears the Sufi hallmarks of ecstatic spirituality conveyed at once through lush imagery and verbal restraint. His fabulistic, almost didactic style can sound a bit flat at times (How / Do I / Listen to others? / As if everyone were my Master / Speaking to me / His / Last / Words), but there is a religious intensity in his work that is equally fresh and naive (When no one is looking and I want / To kiss / God / I just lift my own hand / To / My / Mouth) and quite unlike anything found in the Western tradition (though modern minimalists such as Robert Lax come close). There isn't a better gift in the world for morning reading - to help you get ready for a happy day full of surprises. It is hard to hold on to negative expectations when Hafiz is around. Daniel Ladinsky takes a leap as only a master of altered consciousness can and each poem is an experience of weightlessness. Give this book to someone trapped by the suffering of poverty, worry, or grief. Stand back and wait for it... 3... 2... 1... and then the dawn.

Beautiful poetry, amazing insights

Hafiz is the sort of genius you go back to repeated for guidance, for counsel, to regain your bearing.
Beautiful lines of poetry convey incredible wisdom and peace. I found him about a year ago and he was and is a long lost friend.

Absolutely beautiful poetic translation occasionally marred by silly attempts at contemporary relevance

Poetry is something I seldom read, but the range of philosophical and religious reflection in Hafiz' writing is amazing, delightful, and life-affirming. Not every poem is equally rewarding, but how could they be? The translations make these ancient short poems speak to the present day, but sometimes too much so--using terms that have only come into our language in the 20th or 21st centuries at times borders on "cutsie", which distracts from the true meaning. When Ladinsky sticks to standard and time-tested language and grammar, his translations have much deeper impact, for me anyway. I have not read other translations of Hafiz, but I imagine previous ones are full of "thee's" and "thou's", and less erudite perspectives. I highly recommend this book--for me is has more understanding and depth concerning daily living than Rumi, for instance. Just beware that there are some shockingly off-the-mark, if sincere, attempts to make this ancient poetry relevant to us now. Ladinsky apparently spent years working on this book, so my hat is off to his scholarship.

About the Author
Me’Shell was born in Many, Louisiana a very small town where she resided with her mother whom worked at the local wood mill and one older sister whose life was filled so she often found herself alone. And at the early age of six or seven found her escape through books discovering new places and meeting new people. And that’s where her love for words took off. By the time she was in Jr. High she had already started writing short stories and that’s when she found yet another love in poetry and began her art work in that to. Becoming a writer has always been her dream as her love for words continued to grow. So at the age of 35 she wrote her first novel, and let’s just say her journey along the way has been nothing short of awesome as her passion for writing continues.

I really enjoyed this read it was exciting a real page turner. I liked Tilmon even though he was evil sometimes I think somewhere deep inside he had a heart. Tasha not sure what to say about her. I know I didn't care for her, all she was looking for is a thug. Watch out what u wish for. Lyic, because of her childhood her life was a mess. All I can say about her is look out don't cross her. Don't pass this up u won't be disappointed.

This book was definitely an attention keeper. For me personally, I could not put it down because I wanted to know what happened next after each chapter. I can't wait until the next one drops. Congratulations Me'Shell, you really outdid yourself with this one.

About the Author
Humphrey Carpenter worked at the BBC before becaming a full-time writer in 1975. He was the author of 14 of the well-loved Mr Majeika titles as well as two Shakespeare Without the Boring Bits titles for children. He was also the co-author, with his wife Mari Prichard, of The Oxford Companion to Children's Literature. He was an eminent figure in the world of adult literature and published award-winning biographies including, among others, those of J. R. R Tolkein, C. S. Lewis, W. H. Auden, Benjamin Britten and Spike Milligan. From 1994-1996 he directed the Cheltenham Festival of Literature and for many years he ran a young people's drama group, the Mushy Pea Theatre Company. He wrote plays for radio and theatre and was a regular contributor to the Guardian. Humphrey died in January 2005.

I loved this book and I think it is aged 4 to 12
I think the ghost train was a really good and different book not like any of the books I've ever read before I think Humphrey carpenter is the is the best writer I've ever read super!!!

This well-known standard work is an expansion by O. G. Tietjens of a famous series of lectures delivered by Professor Prandtl at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Flow Research. Based on Prandtl's own work, it combines a considerable amount of original material with unique insights and presentations. Wherever possible, the hydrodynamic theory presented is tied to practical experience, while experimental results are in turn related back to the underlying theory and the fundamental physical laws.
Partial contents: the statics of liquids and gases (equilibrium and stability, application of the pressure equation, static-lift on gas-filled aircraft, surface tension); kinematics of liquids and gases (geometry of the vector field, acceleration of a fluid particle, equation of continuity); the dynamics of non-viscous fluids (the Eulerian equation, potential motion, two-dimensional potential motion, vortex motion, the influence of compressibility, the equation of Navier-Stokes for viscous fluids).
While the presentation is fundamentally physical rather than mathematical, when proofs are given they are rigorous and vector analysis is employed. But the text is remarkably clear and understandable, ideally suited for both research workers and graduate-level students.

Historical masterpiece

This book is a fluid-dynamics masterpiece. Maybe it's a little bit outdated now, but it's the book two or three generations of fuid scientists (30s-50s) used during their studies. Definitely a must-have for the serious theoretical fluid dynamicist, not the right book if you're looking for computational methods.

An old classic

Ludwig Prandtl's lectures at Gottingen form the basis for this, the basic building block of classical aerodynamics. Expect to learn about the basic assumptions inherent to the use of linear theory to aerodynamic problems. Be prepared for the use of conformal mapping and functions of complex variables. Best read in combination with the companion volume on Applied Aero- and Hydro-mechanics.

Good for students with science/engineering background

If you're looking at this book, you probably already have an interest in physics and engineering. If you don't, ask your guidance counselor how to switch majors. I kid, I kid.

This is a great book for someone new to the study of fluid dynamics, but who has an understanding of general physics and calculus. I haven't taken math since high school, so I was a little rusty on dealing with some of the equations, but anyone who has a comfortable working knowledge of derivatives and integrals should not find the math to be too great an obstacle. The book is good about connecting equations to principles, starting immediately in with statics at a level simple enough that the reader can follow without previous knowledge of this subject, yet not so simple that it spends half the book as a "history of" or basic physics primer. If you understand the concepts of force, mass, velocity and acceleration, and some basic geometry, you should be able to follow it with no problem. The book uses mathematical constructs to explain relationships, but not in the way some authors have of making the whole thing seem much more complicated than it is.

I'm using this as a self-teaching aid, because it's interesting to me and I'm kind of weird like that. Most of my physics knowledge is also self-taught, and I haven't had any classes in engineering, so if you already have several years of education in this area, I imagine you would find it slow-paced. For everyone else, it's a good resource.
