About the Author
Bandhu Dunham began teaching himself the art of lampworking in 1975. Since then, he has taught others at facilities worldwide, including The Studio Corning Museum of Glass, Niijima Glass Art Center, Red Deer College, Penland School of Crafts and Pilchuck School. In between Bandhu's production and teaching schedules, he is working on Volume III for Contempory Glassworking.

Good skill building books

This is a two book set of volume I and II of Bandhu Scott Dunham's series on Contemporary Lampworking. Taken together these two books and the following book, Volume III make up a series which is the lampworking equivalent to Oppi Untracht's "Jewelry: Concepts And Technology", i.e. a definitive survey on the subject. I think a good first book for people just learning recreational lampworking is Cindy Jenkins' "Making Glass Beads", which may give the novice a bit more of the romance of it in a more enthusiastic manner. These books should definitely be the next two on the reading list for the serious lampworking student.

Dunham presents a series of topics which show the reader the basics of how to do lampworking, starting with very simple ways to heat glass, add colored stringers and progressing right on up to very complex ways of making complex objects, such as laboratory glassware and large sculptures. Book I is the basics and book II is not just a step up toward more advanced techniques, but a step describing advanced tooling. Initially I wished for more information about specifics of tools themselves, but then I realized that lampworking is not a thing which is bound by any specific technology, but rather by skill of the worker and the properties and chemistry of the glass.

For me, one single technique, the proper winding of a steel wool vessel core, paid for the books. Perhaps for another reader it would be the hint to use a borosilicate punty when making Effetre marbles or the proper way to place a dot or any one of the thousands of other simple things we learned wrong when we start out with lampworking.

The language is fairly simple if you've done basic lampworking and read previous lampworking books and have a basic knowledge of both art glass and lab glassware. One word should do for an example. It is found in a technique which tells about the use of a "rubber policeman" to temporarily stop up a hole at the cold end of a piece of glassware. Anyone who has worked in labs knows what are rubber policemen, but people who come to lampworking from the world of video games and t.v. shows probably should keep in mind that their browser can link to dictionaries.

Some of the reviewers seem to be put off by the black and white photos. I don't believe I would have told that, since it betrays a certain level of inexperience on the subject. Lampworking has two photographic facts of life. Number one is that color photography is not adequate to capture the color spectrum of hot glass. Number two is that hot glass in a flame produces a flare or false color reaction which makes unfiltered color photographs a mess of yellow and throws off the color of filtered ones.

Other readers seem put off by the fact that a lot of the techniques are more directly applicable to borosilicate than to COE 104. I'm not at the level where I can actually do boro with any confidence but I've achieved a level where I can see that the distinction is a false one. The techniques build on one another. If you can keep Effetre cooler but warm enough to work on just a spot without cracking the rest it makes you a better borosilicate worker and if you can work on the stiffer borosilicate it helps you cut down overheating your Effetre. Et cetera.

A minor irritant is that these books are spiral bound, which would make these books difficult for a precocious young reader to handle. However any adult who has sufficient manual dexterity for basic lampworking should be able to read them without tearing pages.

A Must Read for Lampworkers

I found this book to be fantastic. Despite my only working in soft glass, I love that it talks about Boro as well. I had an instructor tell me it didn't apply to soft glass work and I shouldn't buy it... I am so glad I make decisions for myself! The history told is very informative, the tips and tricks throughout the book make it worth every penny. I was most interested in learning the chemistry behind the glass because once you understand that, so many other things come into place. Even on the descriptions that don't direct relate to what I do, I learned something. I love the author's sense of humor- it makes the book an easy and delightful read. So many books are simply "how-to's" these days and don't explain the "whys". Thank you for writing this book and explaining the "whys" in a way everyone can understand! I have now purchased volumes 2 and 3 and am excited to read them. A must have for any lampworker's library.

Bruno Latour is a philosopher and anthropologist working in Paris. His many books on science and culture include Pandora's Box: Essays in the Reality of Science Studies, Science in Action, The Pasteurization of France, and Laboratory Life. A superb textbook about Nothing made visible

In many ways this massive Yellow Pages-sized book sums up what I have always suspected about the visual arts in our time as such: That their greatness comes from the collective force of one-liners which are not all that arresting taken individually. This book really shows that the function of art in our time is that of a collective commentary on the Sutra of Art, and as such necessarily way more verbose than the original "sacred" text. Here all the eminently forgettable one-liner images made in the name of art, anti-art, art-taboo, and art voodoo throughout history---from all cultures--are gathered and presented in the full glory of their collective greatness.
But, do take note that this book is not an "art book" as such, and certainly not a coffee table variety. It belongs on your desk along with your dictionaries and encyclopedias. This is a textbook at its finest. The meat of this book is really the essays, with the images---many of them small but very clear-- inserted to augment the discussion, not the other way around.
So then what are some of the things discussed? A set of essays is grouped under a particular question, and there are some 12 plus questions that cue you in right away as to what is going to be discussed. It is like having a seminar program showing the topics to be discussed, time, and room numbers.
Some of the questions asked and responded to: WHY DO IMAGES TRIGGER SO MUCH FUROR? WHY ARE IMAGES SO AMBIGUOUS? WHY DO GODS OBJECT TO IMAGES? WHAT IS ICONOCLASH? WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO MODERN ART? HAS CRITIQUE ENDED?
What intelligent person could possibly resist the temptation to find out what people have said in response to these questions? I would be a liar to say that I have read through every single essay in the book. I have not. But what I have read so far--a huge chunk--have all been very thoughtful and sincere. Now that's rare in a book whose subject matter concerns art-talk!
With over fifty people writing, talking, interviewing, there is a huge range of styles of discourse, some delightful, some witty, some funny, some dry. But, all in all, this is a very thoughtful and timely presentation of an important subject with minimum pretentiousness. As the subtitle indicates, it concerns all who take interest in the problem of images in art, religion, and science. Highly recommended.

In an astonishing novel of epic scope, Bell (Save Me, Joe Louis) follows the lives of a handful of characters from radically different social strata during the period of Haiti's struggle for independence. Nothing about that period was simple. In 1791, when the Caribbean island that native Amerindians called "Hayti" was divided between a Spanish colony in the east and the French colony of Saint Domingue, a slave revolt broke out in the French territory that claimed 12,000 lives in its first months. But the fighting wasn't only between black slaves and white owners; the colony had a Byzantine social structure that recognized 64 different "shades" of mulatto; of the half-million blacks in Saint Domingue, some 30,000 were free mulattos whose political interests often ran contrary to those of the slaves. The country's 40,000 whites were themselves divided over the outcome of the recent revolution in France. During the next 12 years, to increase their power bases, four racial/political groups?white royalists, white republicans, free mulattos and black slaves?formed and dissolved a string of unlikely alliances at a dizzying clip. Bell's principals here include a runaway slave looking for real freedom, the disturbed mistress of a razed sugar plantation and a royalist soldier in the embattled Cap Francais guard. Central to the narrative are Toussaint L'Ouverture, the enigmatic 51-year-old leader of the revolt, and Doctor Antoine Hebert, a Frenchman who shows up in Haiti just before the revolt breaks out. Hebert, who spends time as Toussaint's prisoner, falls for a freed mulatto. Warned by a young married Frenchwomen that "Who marries a black woman becomes black," the physician is appalled, yet heeds the very words he dismisses. Toussaint, too, bears the mark of contradiction. He appears to be a simple, devout man, but he has "learned a way to make his words march in more than one direction." A handful of chapters are set in 1802, when Toussaint is taken across the Atlantic as a prisoner. By omitting the middle of the revolutionary's story (during which he takes over Haiti, names himself governor-general and refuses to declare it independent), Bell astutely indicates that Toussaint, who saw himself as a noble warrior, was in fact motivated by a bizarre and self-defeating concept. By alluding to the end of the revolution only in a beautiful and haunting epilogue, moreover, Bell avoids the sense of victory that mars so many novels about revolution. Here at least, after more than 500 wrenching pages of rapes and massacres and fetuses impaled on pikes, there can be no question of a winner of the battle for Haitian liberation. Surviving it was feat enough. In Bell's hands, the chaos, marked by unspeakable acts of violence, that surrounds these characters somehow elucidates the nobility of even the most craven among them.

As has been the case throughout much of its history, Haiti in the 1790s was racked by violence?the result of an intricate and sometimes brutal system of racial and social classification exacerbated by the upheavals of the French Revolution. Thus, Haiti provides an ideal setting for Bell (Save Me Joe Louis, LJ 5/1/93) to explore his interest in the motivations that all too often propel us to give vent to our baser instincts. The story centers on the bloody beginnings of the rebellion from which Toussaint L'Ouverture, a seemingly docile slave, eventually emerged as the self-proclaimed governor general of the island. Bell has crafted a somewhat complex and violent tale?it opens with a woman being crucified for killing her baby so he would not have to live the life of a slave. Not for the faint-hearted, this work offers a fascinating glimpse into a little-known episode of hemispheric history. One can be glad for the chronology and the glossary Bell includes. Most appropriate for public libraries and academic libraries where Bell's work is popular.

Arise and Weep

This is the kind of book that can make you seem obsessed. Once you enter Bell's world, you're disturbed, excited, and depressed, but you can't stop talking about the book you're in. It's like having a secret that's too heavy to really divulge, but you keep alluding to parts of it, as if you were talking in code. People look at you like you're sort of cracked, but generally they think it will pass. The blood-soaked history of Haiti is cause for despair, but the revolutionary spirit of the 1790's makes you hope in spite of what you know. Toussaint is one of the great heroes of all time, and Bell makes him both human and epic. In this book, you don't develop much emotional connection to him -- that's the province of more fictional characters like Doctor Hebert and Riau -- but you care immensely about his success as a leader. You want him to be as great, as visionary, as Martin Luther King, but he belongs to a different era, a violent one. The backdrop of the French Revolution, with its mixture of rights and terror, is essential to the drama of All Souls' Rising, and most readers will need to read the appendix several times to stay abreast of royalists, Jacobins, and emissaries from the Mother Country. Some knowledge of American history might help --Jefferson, for instance, opposed the Haitian slave revolt because he feared something similar in the US which would deprive him of slaves plus the boost he got from the 3/5 compromise which gave white planters more votes, while Adams and Pickering favored emancipation and liberation -- but you can follow the essential plot without historical annotation. It's the kind of gravy that lifts the book to a higher level, but readers looking for love, betrayal, courage, devotion, cruelty, sex, and perverse logic will be sated. Contemporary maps won't help with many of the locations, but Bell has a map in the second volume of the trilogy, Master of the Crossroads, that helped me get a sense of place. The themes and the style of the book are managed with power and grace. Bell's a hell of a writer, and I believed each of the voices in the narrative. Big books like this sweep you up and carry you away, but this book sweeps the reader into a present time of continuous revolution in Haiti, slaughter in Sudan, disease and unending horror in much of Africa, war in Iraq and Afghanistan, etc. The blood drama of Bell's Haiti gives us a red filter for understanding our own time. At the end of the book, I'm thrilled by the revolutionary possibilities, depressed by the inevitable destruction and failure, and grateful for every moment of compassion and kindness however small. I can't wait to read the next volume.

Ominous, powerful, and exotic

This story of the Haitian revolution is violent and disturbing, but its violence is handled with care and placed in the context of each character's psychology and motivations. The characters are believable, the history seems painstakingly accurate, and the sensory descriptions are rich and vivid. The book leaves you with new, unresolved questions about what race is -- a topic which obsesses many of the characters in the book as well.
An unforgettable read and an important one.

comprehensible and worthwhile

I found this an extremely difficult read: I was 16, knew nothing about Haiti's history, and spoke no French. I took nearly three months to finish reading the book, because every so often I had to take a break from the horrific violence Bell portrays. In the end, however, this novel remains one of the most impressive I have ever read, in terms of the way it really made me think. The depths of terror and violence to which Bell's characters resorted shocked me. But I did not lose sight of the novel's bigger picture. Ultimately, I have little sympathy for the book's reviewers who could not see past the novel's violence and complexity. Five tries to get through the book? Try a Dick and Jane reader, then, and come back in a few years.

Worse for Wear ...

Mansson's "Heinrich Himmler: A Photographic Chronicle of Hitler's Reichsfuehrer" is a very disappointing volume, preferably receiving no stars from me because the book is plagued by horrible photographic reproductions (multiple-generations-removed from original). Morover, most of the pictures were blatantly scanned directly from previously printed works, manipulated and crudely reproduced in this ... book. There are better quality reproductions of these same pictures in other publications, only a few of which receive mention in a very brief list of "published material." Sometimes the author claims credit to his own "archives," but since the pictures were lifted from books, perhaps he means his "library?"
The book is not an organized "chronicle" as stated in its title; it's a hodgepodge throughout. Furthermore, the author doesn't know the details of his topic, which is made obvious by many factual errors in the attempted, descriptive captions (sometimes almost laughable). The book offers no resource references for its statements, nor does it provide any original research. It doesn't even contain an index. Further evidences of the author's dereliction are the numerous typographical errors and misspellings of names.

A well travelled Reichsfuhrer.

The author has attempted a photographic album of Himmler's life from his youth to his death. There are several hundred photos, the majority taken during the war and emphasizing the Reichsfuhrer's frequent military inspections on the home, eastern and western fronts. Whatever you think of Himmler he certainly kept himself busy. Some of the photos show Himmler with other personalities of the period, including second raters such as Anton Mussert, the Dutch collaborator, as well as senior SS personnel including Karl Wolff and Sepp Dietrich. It is fair to say the contents are not completely comprehensive, although some prints have not been available publicly before. But there is little record here of Himmler's domestic life, for example, which was visually quite well represented in Peter Padfield's biography.
The interest of the book is that nobody before has compiled a visual history of Himmler. He was obviously very conscious of the presence of photographers and usually maintained that official inane grin under all circumstances. Here and there he is caught off guard, for example trying to dodge the camera when too close to Hitler who is handing out awards. If you always thought that the shortsighted Himmler was not overtly photogenic, this book will confirm that belief.
Unfortunately, the book shows signs of being rushed into print without thorough editing. The text accompanying the photos is sometimes quaint, such as the ambiguous suggestion on page 233 that Himmler's adjutants were released several years after the war "due to their membership in the SS." A number of the photos are undated and the later sections are a bit of a chronological jumble. All in all, this is a book for the collector who wants lots of photos of Himmler between two covers.

Quality photo issues.

The book, as another reviewer pointed out, and which is true, is a book full of truly lousy reproductions. Another few photocopies such as this and the images shall be decidedly worthless, unrecognisable, and devoid of life.
The book does contain a vast collection of images of Himmler and is a good character study in photographic form of the man. As I, warned by a reviewer, and warned by myself, do however find the book worthy of owning as there nothing else available with the variety and breadth of shear numbres as contained within this book; as far as I am aware. Buy it; buy it as long you understand the photographs are 3rd, 4th, 10th generation copies and not pristine original quality as many if not all books printed in Das Dritte Reich era were.

The low star-rating is due to the sub-satandard quality of the images.

The book is worthy of owning for reference.
