Good but too short!

I have been longing for a dose of Walt! So, when I saw Craig's mention of this book on Facebook last night, I immediately ordered it. Today, my wife was working on her Christmas decorations while I was half watching the Army/Navy game. Seemed like a good time to fire up the old Fire and get back to Walt! After just a few pages, it was like resuming a conversation with an old friend. The only real problem with Christmas in Absaroka County is that it is just too short! If you have read any of the other Walt Longmire books, you will enjoy these short stories. But it looks like I will have to wait for A Serpent's Tooth this spring to get the the fix that I really needed! Happy Holidays to snowy Absaroka County and Sheriff Walt Longmire!

Laughing one minute, wiping tears the next

Craig Johnson's Christmas stories had me laughing one minute and wiping tears the next. Also included, the first chapter of Johnson's first Sheriff Longmire novel, THE COLD DISH.

Story #1 "Ministerial Aid." Still mourning the death of his wife, Sheriff Walt Longmire is hung over, hasn't bathed or cut his hair. He throws on a bathrobe, drives to his substation to deliver his deputy's paycheck and encounters an abused housewife who mistakes him for the Messiah. A startled Walt thinks: "Returning after two thousand years and he chooses the Sinclair station in Powder Junction, Wyoming?"

Story #2 "Slick Tongued Devil." A careless newspaper reporter picks up an old obituaries folder and runs the obits as if they are current. A flim flam man sniffing out obits tries to collect money from Sheriff Longmire for a cheesey but expensive Bible supposedly ordered by his wife before her death.

(Quote) A few granules of snowy sleet swept across the ridges along the Bighorn Mountains and collected in the low spots and lee sides of the European blue sage, and on one of the escaped structural limbs of the sweat lodge, a great horned owl sat with his back to me. The Cheyenne believe that owls are messengers of the dead and that they bring word from worlds beyond. (End Quote)

Story #3 "Toys For Tots." While his daughter Cady does her Christmas shopping at the mall, a grumpy Sheriff Waltmire befriends the young Navy chaplain manning a Toys For Tots box.

Walt muses: "I thought about how the Army and Marines had lost a hundred chaplains during WWII--the third highest mortality rate behind the infantry and Army Air Corps--and how, on the USAT Dorchester in 1943, four chaplains had given their life jackets and lives for others."

When a shoplifter comes running out of a store, Walt seizes the moment to turn the chaplain into a hero.

Story #4 "Unbalanced" On his way to pick up his daughter Cady at the Billings airport, Sheriff Longmire stops at a gas station. He offers a ride to a half-frozen young woman who has two possessions: a guitar and a small wood-gripped revolver. She's wearing an ID bracelet from a psychiatric hospital and she has an experienced way of tuning the truck's CD player.

Walt's observation: "The Little Bighorn country is a beautiful swale echoing the Bighorn Mountains and the rolling hills of the Mission Buttes--a place of change that defies definition. Just when you think you know it, it teaches you a lesson--just ask the Seventh Cavalry."

THE COLD DISH, Chapter One, from the opening:
"Bob Barnes says they got a dead body out on BLM land. He's on line one."... I looked at her, looking being one of my better law-enforcement techniques. Ruby's a tall woman, slim, with a direct manner and clear blue eyes that tend to make people nervous. I like that in a receptionist/dispatcher, keeps the riffraff out of the office. She leaned against the doorjamb and went to shorthand, "Bob Barnes, dead body, line one."

A tip of the hat to Craig Johnson. May he never run out of great stories.

Craig Johnson Delivers Just in time for Christmas!

Another great Longmire story. The series is well worth a read and is applicable to nearly any age group. I have given this to my 20 year old son and my 75 year old father. Think Louis L'Amoure with attitude.

As Brian Carrier is to file system forensics and Harlan Carvey is to Windows registry analysis, Andrew Hoog is to the Android operating system. The level of detail in this book demonstrates a deep understanding of this complex and unique operating system. Chapter 1 begins with an overview of both Android and Linux in general. Instructions are provided for creating a virtual machine environment so the reader can follow along with the examples in the book. Throughout, the reader is encouraged to follow along, and ample opportunities are provided. This is highly appreciated as most technical books overwhelm the reader with information rather than guide them along the way. Chapter 2 presents an overview of the hardware that is supported by the Android OS. Chapter 3 begins the discussion of the Android OS proper. Included in this chapter are instructions on augmenting the previously created VM with the Android SDK providing additional tools for use in analysis. Chapter 4 is devoted to discussing the file systems likely to be encountered in the Android environment. Special attention is paid to YAFFS and YAFFS2. Chapter 5 discusses securing the data within the device. Also presented are recommendations for securely using Android devices in an enterprise environment. Additional advice is given for both users and developers to limit the exposure of sensitive data. Chapter 6 covers the most significant portion of the book with instructions on acquiring the data from device. Logical and physical acquisitions from the handset as well as the removable storage are discussed. The issue of passcode circumvention is discussed along with potential solutions. Chapter 7 finishes with timeline analysis techniques for the YAFFS file system and the FAT file system. Additional locations of interest to both security researchers and forensic analysts are also presented. Overall the book is enjoyable to read and will be a valuable asset for both forensic analysts and researchers.

Kindle version is device dependent for readability

One reviewer commented that code samples are unreadable for the Kindle version. That seems to be true for standard, small screen, non-color devices (i.e. classic Kindles). However, on my iPad Kindle app the code samples are fine. In fact you can unpinch them to zoom in, and rotate your device to portrait mode if needed. Also, the online Kindle Cloud Reader shows the code samples clearly. Hopefully future conversions of technical texts such as this one will be done with more care to allow resizing of special text. For now you will need your PC with the free Cloud Reader, or some large screen tablet device to take advantage of this ebook.

Andrew Hoog has done an outstanding job presenting a complex topic that should interest not only advanced forensic practitioners but the typical Android Smartphone user as well. Highly recommended, whether its for work, or you want to know what "rooting" your Android phone actually does to the device.

I absolutely loved this book

I absolutely loved this book, loved it, loved it, loved it. Oh yeah did I mention how much I love this book?

I first came across this author in The Book Club as everyone was raving about his first book The Wronged Sons which I enjoyed but have got to say Welcome To Wherever You Are just blew me away.

2015 is proving to be a great year for books as I've already read quite a few books already this year that are firm favourites and this one has just flown up there with them.

Welcome To Wherever You Are is a story mainly based in a hostel and focuses on the guests and the staff that work there. The story flicks between each character in their past and present lives. Even though it is quite a fast paced story and flicks back and forth and jumps to different people, it is really easy to keep up with and read.

The opening chapter of this book as with John's first book just grabbed me straight away after that I was hooked and couldn't put it down until I had read it all.

There are some great characters in this book, my favourites being Tommy, Savannah and Nicole, I loved the strength and vulnerability that each of these characters portrayed.

The storyline is just a brilliant idea and unlike any other books I have read, the second half of this book has so many twists and turns that by the end I felt like the author had taken me on an emotional roller coaster ride.

Welcome To Wherever You Are is a fantastic story and a must read.

A Long and Twisty Journey to Get to Wherever You Are

I was a big fan of the recent TV series "Lost," and the one thing that intrigued me more than anything else on the show was how all the characters' lives intersected. Over the course of its run, as the writers revealed more and more of the characters' pasts through intricate flashbacks, viewers came to expect that the various storylines would weave together in unexpected but always fascinating ways. From the writer's standpoint, such a complex plot is extremely difficult to pull off without either completely confusing readers or, on the other hand, losing that requisite degree of plausibility that allows readers to suspend their disbelief at the enormous coincidences involved. Few novels attempt such a tricky plot structure, and even fewer pull it off. John Marrs's "Welcome to Wherever You Are" is the closest I've read to "Lost"-style plotting, without smoke monsters and seemingly supernatural forces, but with some inventive storytelling.

In the case of Marrs's characters, wherever you are happens to be the Venice Beach International Hostel, a dump of a motel that caters to those without much money to spend, and, in many cases, without much of a life as well. As the various tenants at the hostel begin checking in, Marrs starts filling readers in on their pasts in a series of flashbacks for each main character. Going back a year or two in each case, Marrs sketches in their backstories, some of which seem fairly routine, and others quite bizarre. Among them are a former English nurse who has come to Los Angeles on a quest to learn more about a now deceased elderly patient, the runaway daughter of a televangelist who has found employment as a stripper, and the gay former lead singer of a boy band whose musical career ended in a drug scandal a couple of years earlier.

In each case, Marrs takes his time telling the story. Usually, his characters are in no hurry, and neither is he. After the first couple of chapters, he begins using flashbacks extensivley, but they are clearly labeled and, after the first time he uses the technique, fairly easy to follow. Each character soon has two parallel storylines, one in the present day and one gradually filling in the details from the past. Surprisingly, at least for me at least, most of the characters were not stereotypes but quite well developed, especially as the story went along. "Wherever You Are" does require a bit of patience on the parts of readers, as it takes a while for some of the storylines to come into focus, but by about the one-third point in the book, readers will have a pretty good idea who's who and will be eagerly anticipating what happens next.

As I mentioned earlier, what happens next often involves intersecting storylines, as some of these characters met up with others in the past, unbeknownst to them, and the actions that some take in the present also have unforeseen consequences. I realize that this description is very broad, but I don't want to give any of the clever plot twists away. Most books are lucky if they have one good surprise; "Wherever You Are" easily has a dozen, most of which will come as major shockers. As the book progresses, readers will become more and more fascinated as they anticipate the next gotcha moment in the book.

Obviously, in a book like this, some characters and storylines fare better than others. Only one character, the stripper, was a major disappointment for me. She is one of the few American characters in the book (the hostel seems to be a magnet for expats and Marrs, who is British, clearly feels more at home writing about people with whose backgrounds he feels more familiar). The stripper, and especially her cartoonishly racist televangelist father, struck me as nothing more than crude stereotypes. Fortunately, Marrs gives readers a lot of other characters to spend time with as well.

"Welcome to Wherever You Are" is on one level an elaborately intricate gimmick, but it's also a deeply personal drama with a number of interesting and fascinating characters. Amazon rather unfairly in my opinion characterizes the book as crime fiction, but, while some of the storylines involve various sorts of criminal activity, the book is much more than a simple mystery or procedural. "Welcome to Wherever You Are" is a journey, both for the characters who have come quite a long way, both literally and figuratively, to wind up at the hostel, and for the readers who travel on an equally fascinating 400-page path to get to know them.

It took me a while to get into the story and even longer to even care a jot for the characters, but all of a sudden it grabbed me. I found myself thinking about it during the day and couldn't wait to get back to it and I haven't done that with a book in a long time.

Sin of Ambition is an book that will draw you in and keep you interested to the very end.You will care about the characters, and want to keep reading to find out what happens to them. The writing is rich in detail, which helps you to lose yourself in the story. It's a very satisfying read.

One of the greatest books on modern witchcraft that you could purchase the spells are easy to understand easy to read and it explains everything you need to know from A to Z I definitely would recommend this book for anybody that is interested in witchcraft and spells anybody from beginner to intermediate to pro I definitely would recommend this book 5 out of 5

My favorite spellbook I currently own and I'm that weirdo who collects them yet never does a single spell. The only slight nitpick is that she asks for tarot cards and once used, the card is harmed beyond repair. Some see Tarot as just cards or a game, but I take divination far more serious so I could never ruin any of my cards, even if its a spare deck I had laying around. But that's more personal to me.
