Best Teaching Chinese Textbook Available Today

As a teacher of Mandarin, it is very difficult to find a suitable teaching text. This is the best one I've come across. It can be adapted to a variety of age groups, but it assumes foundation in characters and must be supported by textbooks that teach characters specifically. For that, I recommend "The Way of Chinese Characters: The Origins of 400 Essential Words."

Excellent reference and learning aid

As a native English speaker and fluent French speaker Chinese was a great challenge. The Cheng-Tsui Integrated Chinese series is excellent. The books provide a clear, coherent and well-written guide to learning Chinese reading, writing, speaking and cultural education.
There is a consistent set of characters you follow through subject-related lessons. Travel words, food, finding an apartment, seeing tourist sites, etc.
The book has a set of great indices/vocabulary lists at the back of the book. One gives English->Pinyin and the other gives Pinyin->English.
My class used the whole series of textbook, workbook, character workbook and online audio exercises.
After 6 months of studying I spent a month in China. Great trip thanks to this book series!
One note of caution: Books are available in traditional and simplified. Make sure you buy the one you/your course requires.

Excellent text book for middle/high or college students

This series was written for college students but it is also good for high school students as well. My son is a freshman in high school and he likes this series much better than the other books he had before. He finds the content more interesting and the format is easier to follow. The language notes and culture highlights are excellent.
